A Dance Fly (Empididae)
Found in a gum tree at Pine Island Reserve, Canberra, ACT, Australia.
These guys sure are tough to photograph! I managed this one right before it took off!

An observation I made today in the reserve was that it was very tricky to find a bug anywhere… they were quite sparse compared to the variety I’d find at this time of year on the Far South Coast of NSW. It was a very hot day with incoming storms so the weather might’ve contributed to this somehow. Maybe they were all hiding from the heat. The majority of bugs spotted were ants and nymphs.
Come to think of it, the volume of flies was just as sparse. Usually we end up covered in them at this time of year but there didn’t seem to be very many.
Has anyone else noticed this and could it be simply weather related? Maybe location related?

This one has my Lightroom watermark on it, it won’t show up on every photo but, perhaps, I should start using it more often.
