Two weeks ago, as part of Dance Nucleus's Residency, we were treated to a workshop by Indonesian choreographer and educator, Benny Krisnawardi, who shared with us some of the codified movements formulated by the late prolific female Minangkabau choreographer, Ibu Gusmiati Suid of Gumarang Sakti Dance Company. He was invited by our mentor, Helly Minarti, who wanted to instigate and tease out the nuances of "Malayness" in dance via juxataposing how the "Minang Body" was understood by Ibu Gusmiati. (this is not to say Minang=Malay, but to look at dance communities of cultural affinities to acknowledge what had been done and how it was done) I found the workshop enriching and helpful to think through the many techniques and taxonomies derived mostly from Pencak Silat. Most times when providing context about a particular movement or activity, Helly and Uda Benny would give cultural examples relevant to the Minangkabau. That for me felt quite like a moment of "revisiting" because I am of Minangkabau descent. #soultari #365soulgrateful #365grateful #dancenucleus #element3 https://www.instagram.com/p/BoDVMLWB4b_-_5auGhK7EvAHdb39ys0Ipj59Yc0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ffzrvl7r3x46
