Until the end of the 19th century, London was a major shipbuilding centre. Here a small warship is under construction in one of the many private yards at Rotherhithe, on the south bank of the Thames, although similar scenes were common on both sides of the river. The artist, John Cleveley, was a shipwright whom worked at the Royal Dockyard in Deptford but also turned to professional painting in the 1740's. {Source National Maritime Museum} 23-03-17 - National Maritime Museum
