If you see the outline of my body through the clothes that I’m wearing, you should recognize that it is just a body, and that there are billions of people with bodies living on this planet.  If you see my nipples through my shirt, you should know that I think society’s treatment of women’s nipples is both degrading and ridiculous, so it is intentional.  After all, both females and males have nipples, yet somehow, they’re considered more offensive than cleavage or a belly button when a woman has one exposed.  

If you treat me like I am just an object and yell obscenities at me on the street, I will ignore you because you are ignoring my existence as a human with a mind more beautiful than your small mindedness could ever imagine.  If you threaten my friends and I as we walk down a street, know that you are not the first, nor will you be the last, and that it doesn’t scare me anymore.  So, when I grab my friend’s hand and gently place a kiss on it, do not mistake my gentleness for an unawareness or a naivete of the world surrounding me.  I am well aware that you, scum of the streets, exist.  I am well aware that you have been fantasizing of injuring and sexually abusing my friend and I, and unlike most in a crowded room, you lack the decency to at least bottle it up and keep it quiet. 

You’re verbalizing your hatred of me.  And all I can manage in that moment is a quiet composure, a mastery of my own rage, so I keep on walking forward, eyes averted.  With each thing you scream at me, meant to somehow demoralize and dehumanize me, I feel the armor that has resulted after years of this kind of treatment by strangers slowly encase my heart, mind, and vital organs.  I feel the strength of my being.  I sense your weakness, and I’m uncertain why I feel such a venomous hatred towards you.  I know that you are just the result of a patriarchal society that has for thousands of years mistreated women and considered them something less than man.  Somehow your viciousness in all of its nakedness is less despicable than someone who quietly thinks and acts upon such thoughts.  Yet, for the tremble I feel in my companion’s hand and the tears she will shed later in the car ride home, I hate you.  I hate everything you are and everything society has let you become.
