The example I chose for my everyday type use is in this Musical Theatre Score book. Although it may seem as though this is not an everyday use, believe me, it is. I sing and play musicals on the daily, just ask my roommates! 

This cover is very unique in the sense that it uses many paragraph styles to present itself. Such as the justification of the sentence at the bottom, or the choice of tight kerning between the L and the O, a glyph, and some tracking! Not sure what font this serif type would be, but it is very beautiful and clean! 

This shows me that although less is more, sometimes you can explore with more, and K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Still!!!)

There are countless design crimes committed in this example, from the poor website logo to the telephone wire horizontal rule. Clearly there are contrast issues here, and the designer seems to have been motivated by the green/black combination of the Matrix movies.

However, the real problem with the typography here is the selection of two barely used fonts. The green text appears inComic Sans while the secondary headings appear to be Courier (?), usually found in raw text editors or when the source of a web page is viewed.

Both fonts have difficulty in clearly conveying the message of the subject matter because they are hard to read. Comic Sans is designed to be used in black on a white background in groups of no more than 30 words, while Courier’s natural home is in your computer’s command prompt. The result of combining the two is a website that excludes its readers.

This will help me further understand what not to do for future projects when it comes to combining two fonts for any project. Just taking a look at JasonGraphix.com now, I realize how much better the site’s combinations in type has become!

MoMA 2015

here is my personal experience at the MoMA.

The book I chose for my catalog blog is called Museum Graphics and was organized within multiple areas from the MOMA all the way to Musee International de la Croix-Rouge in Geneva. It is a catalog for graphics such as posters of the modern age with heavy set type or photographs. It is separated into chapters of each country, with sections on which organizations withheld the viewings.

The typeface used within the whole book is called Monophoto Frutiger. It is a sans-serif font in the color black, used in the multiple forms of bold and italics.

Measurements:

Outside Margin: 3p0

Gutter Margin: 3p6

Top Margin: 3p6

Bottom Margin: 3p4

A 6 column grid with a 1p6 gutter

Not positive that I should incorporate this kind of book layout within my book, but I do appreciate the size and design elements of the book. This will help me further narrow down my final style towards this project.

Here is an example of what I think is bad type. I recently went home and saw my brother's middle school year book on the table. Upon turning the cover page, this was the first sight I got from the book as a whole. There was no explainable reason as to why this was placed here. It had nothing to do with that year's theme or the books title. Although it is nice to see the school promoting good behavior. This page's font is called Avalon. It is used in bold type and not in true small caps. And although this page may have a specific grid, it is not showcased here. And overall, the wrongful use of justification of the paragraph of words has caused rivers to form through the page, making it really distracting for any person to read. I hope this yearbook's bad choice in type editing will help influence my behavior in future works, for one always learns from others mistakes.
