In the Vale, Lord Allard Royce defeated the few supporters of Jonos Arryn, but when he demanded the release of Lord Ronnel, Jonos returned his elder brother via the Moon Door, from which he plummeted to his death. It was then up to Prince Maegor, flying on Balerion, the Black Dread—whom he had taken as his own mount after his father’s death—to sort out the mess. Maegor forced the remaining garrison to surrender by throwing Jonos out the Moon Door in turn, then the garrison were all hanged at Maegor’s command. Hubert Arryn, a cousin of Jonos and Ronnel, succeeded to the rule of the Vale.

Dragonstone was quarantined to prevent the illness escaping the island, and Rhaena closed the gates of the citadel to prevent it from escaping the walls. The last to die was Lianna Velaryon, niece to Lord Daemon, who died in Rhaena’s arms. When the details of this illness were shared among the king’s councillors, Rego Draz immediately recognized it as the poison known as the Tears of Lys. Realizing that Culiper had been disposed of before he could identify the poison, Jaehaerys swiftly sent word to Rhaena, who concluded that her husband, Androw Farman, had been the poisoner. Androw threw himself to his death from the Chamber of the Painted Table—though not before admitting his crimes, which he had committed out of anger and jealousy. Rhaena had her men cut his body into pieces and fed to her dragon.
