Technology is inevitable in this day and age. It surrounds us and it is up to us to figure out how to use it. We can use it for good or we can use it for evil. The technology does not decide that for us, it is up to us how to use it. We can determine how long we can make it last, how to build it, and what to build it for.
In the Huffington Post article, “Is Technology Good or Evil?,” writer Daniel Burrus discusses how people use technology for good and for evil. He starts out by staying, “Technology can give you cancer and technology can cure your cancer. So it’s not about whether technology is good or bad; it’s about what we do with technology that matters.” I completely agree with this statement. Technology just provides us with the resources, but it is up to us how we use those resources. We can build TV’s that last 2 years or we can build TV’s that last 20 years. It all depends on the motives we have. What are goals are, what we hope to get out of our use of technology.
Burrus goes on to discuss how drones are becoming more and more popular for military and police surveillance. The drones have saved numerous lives and make surveillance a lot easier so they are becoming more popular. Once the market discovered how popular the drones have become, they continued to release newer, more expensive ones. Again, Burrus has brought up another great point. Some markets take advantage of the power of technology and use it for their own good. Instead of focusing on the main purpose of technology, we begin to become greedy and use it to our own advantage, making money. I believe that technology companies today do not build their products to their fullest potential because it would keep consumers from purchasing as often. Instead of using technology for greed, we should use it for its primary purpose, to make ordinary tasks more convenient and provide safety, knowledge, communication, and security.
Burrus continues to discuss how technology has been used for good and evil over the years, and finishes by saying, “We need to make sure our must-do’s are creating a better, more human, and more enlightened world. Let’s get involved and do whatever we can on an individual level to create a better tomorrow.” Instead of focusing on the negatives of technology and how technology can hurt others to benefit a few, we all need to work together to figure out how technology can benefit everyone and be more of a good than an evil. It is all about perspective.
Technology can do amazing things for us but we must first decide to build it to do amazing things. Instead of focusing on greed or destruction, we should focus on how to advance in medicine and knowledge; how to increase communication. I agree when Burrus explains that technology is a wonderful resource, we just have to use it wisely and for the right reasons.
