Daniel Fahrenheit was born on May 24, 1686. A physicist, inventor, and scientific instrument maker, he helped lay the foundations for the era of precision thermometry by inventing the mercury-in-glass thermometer (first widely-used, practical, accurate thermometer) and Fahrenheit scale(first standardized temperature scale to be widely used). In other words, Fahrenheit's inventions ushered in the first revolution in the history of thermometry (a branch of physics concerned with methods of temperature measurement).

March 11, 2015 (Spring Break)

We don’t have class this week, but the day for presentations is just around the corner.

My topic is Daniel Fahrenheit and his invention of the mercury thermometer and temperature scale.  (Side note:  every time I type out ‘mercury’ I think about Freddie Mercury and it’s terrible because Queen songs are so wonderfully distracting.  And it doesn't help that they sing about being called “Mr. Fahrenheit” repeatedly in one of their songs.)

It’s crazy to think there was a time when there was no common understanding of numerical temperature.  Before the standardized Fahrenheit scale, you couldn't tell someone to wear a jacket tomorrow because it was going to be 50 degrees outside- they would have no idea as to what the number 50 meant in relevance to temperature.  And if you couldn't do something as seemingly simple as that, imagine the problem scientists had trying to share their information.
