Today marks four years since I was molested by Daniel Jorgensen at an Owl City show in Atlantic City. Today I have made the decision to publicly share the victims impact statement I read in court with everyone. It is posted below.
4 years have passed but not a day goes by that this trauma doesn't impact my life. Because of what I was put through, I was unable to continue in traditional high school due to anxiety, especially around male teachers. I quit dancing, which I had done for 12 years at the time, because I was too uncomfortable knowing that I could be watched by men. I had a fear of men instilled in me to the point that I am still hyper aware when they are around me out of eyesight. I have trouble talking to men at work, any time one compliments me, even in the most innocent way, I am filled with fear. Even though I am no longer a child, I involuntarily revert back to my [2013 self], terrified and confused. The strain this caused on my relationships with friends and family is heartbreaking. I became distant and very easily agitated. The normal high school days every kid deserves were stolen out from under me. It happened the weekend before I was set to start high school...now this fall I'm heading to college. I dreamed for 4 years to be dealing with normal teenage stress, like boys or prom, but instead I was forced to deal with what I was put through. I couldn't relate to people my own age, and found it difficult to maintain friendships. My mind was always somewhere else as I dealt with flashbacks and struggling to understand what exactly happened to me. I lost the ability to trust not only others, but also myself. I didn't know who I could trust...I didn't feel like I could really trust anyone. My mind started to register everyone as a threat. I pushed people away because of the fear and walls I felt like I needed to have up. I went through my teen years terrified. Now those high school days are gone and I can't ever get them back. It's been 4 years, and I've worked as hard as one possibly can to heal around an open wound, but until there is justice for what has been done, the wound will remain to be not fully healed. I want nothing more than to be able to heal fully. To be able to live my life knowing that I didn't suffer in vain. To be free from the chains that have held me down with for so long now. No punishment given could possibly make up for what I was put through. But I don't care about a jail sentence, ideally it would be nice to hear, but it's not my goal. My goal in this is to keep it from happening to another young girl. I work with kids, I see their innocence everyday and become furious at the thought of any of them having that stolen from them. I want to be able to rest assured that I am keeping at least one predator away from their innocence. That is all I care about at this point. All children deserve a childhood, untainted and clean. No child deserves to have to sit and question their worth and their life because they feel both were stolen by monsters like Daniel Jorgensen.
