In the hush of the marsh, he stands— a Tricolored Heron dressed for love’s grand hour.
Slate feathers ripple like storm-tossed silk, while his breast blushes faintly with dusk’s violet sigh.
From his crown, pale plumes flare— a crown of light against the shadowed reeds, and his bill, kissed in cerulean flame, points toward the promise of spring.

Daniel started on 6/22/25, posting some of his absolute favorite images and the story of how it happened and why it’s one of his favorite images.
This Yellow Crowned Night Heron image is from his VERY first encounters a wading bird performing a courtship and still the most memorable all of the displays he's photographed.
These birds can display in such a quick and unexpected manor that simplying blinking may cause you to miss it. The second hardest part is waiting for one to display facing your camera, which can take several hours of waiting and being prepared.
He considers this image one of his favorites just for the curiosity it sparked inside him. He had to see more but he also wanted to learn more about their courting behaviors. Since taking this image he's managed to witness five other species perform Nuptial displays and produce some of his most known images by doing so.
This image was taken in Port Royal, South Carolina

Snowy Egrets (Egretta Thula) spends their days feeding, fighting or trying to impress females during the breeding season. For the most part it can be rather comical but they will get serious after a while. This male just fought off several other males for this amazing perch, which offers a full 360° field of view… ALL the ladies can see him now! After a quick preening session he gave one final shake before starting his displays.

Here’s the RAREST of ALL wading birds in North America, the Reddish Egret (White Morph). This color Morph makes up 20% of the Reddish Egret population.
