Daniel has 2 main fears - Becoming a full-fledged cyberman again and deep water. The first one has pretty obvious reasons, but the second actually stems from a deep set fear drowning and deep water.
It started with his great uncle who had been a deep-sea diver and died at sea during one of his dives. Being an imaginative child, Daniel was terrified by the idea of sinking into the deep, dark ocean, never to return. This fear remains with him and is even amplified by his condition cyberman. After all, metal doesn’t float.
