the smell of coffee was prominent, daniela just made a whole pot for the both of you. you sat on the kitchen counter, legs swinging back and forth. you sported one of daniela’s oversized hoodies, the warm mug in your hands.
you’ve always liked daniela, but you knew she wasn’t into you, she wasn’t even into girls in general. it was something she said years ago that you held onto.
“you make coffee way better than i do.”
“you just need to practice, besides i really like your coffee.. it’s bitter in a good way.”
you laugh — a sound that comes easy to you, a sound that made daniela’s chest feel warm.
the sun’s glow on your figure was enough to make daniela forget how to breathe.
daniela didn’t know when it started happening — the long stares, her pumping heart, the way your face was plastered in her mind.
you raise a brow, “what?”
“nothing. you just look like you belong here.”
“in your house?”
“something like that.”
⋆˙⟡
the bed was a mess of blankets and snacks, a cheesy movie playing on the screen, though neither of you were actually watching.
you were half asleep, eyes threatening to close as your head rested on daniela’s shoulder — fingers drawing invisible shapes into the palm of daniela’s hand.
daniela’s heart was beating like crazy, she could smell the vanilla shampoo you’d used earlier, the scent blending with her floral one.
when the characters in the movie kissed, you smiled softly, “took them long enough.” daniela whispered, her voice quiet. you almost laughed, “you’re one to talk..” you mumble into her sleeve.
“what do you mean?”
“just.. you’re impossible.. it’s nothing.”
daniela wanted to bother you for a better answer, but then your arm wrapped around her waist and she forgot about everything, all at once.
⋆˙⟡
rain fell in a rhythmic pattern against the window, the pattering sound bringing you comfort. daniela began to clean up the board game, glancing at you every so often.
she was curious about what you were drawing, finally peeking over to get a look.
“that’s really good.”
you close your book and fake pout, “dani.. i told you to wait until after.”
she laughs at your words, “i couldn’t help it, it’s been thirty minutes, i had to look.”
you offer a genuine smile. “i’ll forgive you, only because you said it looked good.”
daniela playfully gasps, “i need to stop feeding your ego.”
“no you don’t.” you both laugh — you were used to this. your heart swelling with warmth. you kept it in because the woman in front of you wouldn’t return your feelings, but daniela felt something even stronger. her attraction to you wasn’t so subtle anymore, and she couldn’t even deny it.
⋆˙⟡
the kitchen was a mess, flour was everywhere, the white powder visible on your clothes, and on daniela’s face.
“okay. i think you added way too much sugar.”
you stick your finger into the bowl, tasting what the both of you made.
“uhm impossible, sugar is love.”
“you’re going to make us diabetic.”
“worth it.” you smile as you dust the flour off your clothes.
daniela watched you— she really watched you
the way your eyes moved when you smiled, the way your lips twisted when you were focused, the way you looked perfect. impossibly perfect.
her chest felt full, the words were right there — i think i’m in love with you — but she couldn’t find the courage to say them.
instead, she grabbed a pinch of flour and threw it at you, giggling at your state.
you gasp in shock, “you’re so going to get it!” you do the same, the both of you going back and forth with flour and feelings.
she could live in this moment forever
⋆˙⟡
days went by, same routine as always. you took the time to send silly pictures, leaving small sticky notes with sweet messages throughout her house, daniela cooked for you both, loving the warmth you brought into her life.
⋆˙⟡
one night you were asleep on her lap, daniela reached to brush a strand of hair out of your face, smiling. “you’re ridiculous. you have no idea what you do to me. i love you.”
you stirred a little, muttering a small, “love you too.”
her heart stopped, she thought it might give out.
“you’re not allowed to say that when you’re asleep..” she playfully scolds, her smile contradicting her words.
⋆˙⟡
the warm mugs helped shield you two from the cold, your eyes on the view but your mind stuck on the woman next to you. “you’ve been acting weird lately.”
“how?”
“softer..”
daniela bit her bottom lip, blurting out the three words that could ruin everything. “i love you.”
you turn to face her, a smirk displaying across your lips. “yea?”
“yea.”
“took you long enough.” you whisper, before placing a small kiss onto her lips.
it was soft and unpredictable— absolutely perfect in every way.
⋆˙⟡
weeks turned into months, you and daniela in the happiest relationship possible. waking up with her in the mornings felt like a ritual, you wore her hoodie and she made coffee.
daniela handed the coffee with a kiss which you happily returned. “you taste better than the coffee.”
“good.”
“you know you’re mine forever right? i’m never letting you go.”
you smile at her words, “sounds perfect.”
and with that, daniela realized she’d never have to chase happiness ever again.

PAIRING : daniela avanzini x fem!reader
wtv sypnosis means i think its the plot guys: yn is paired in a room with daniela avanzini, her childhood rival. she's pissed, and rightfully so. ANYWAYS i cant give u guys too much of a spoiler ig. sharing a bed blahblahblah, cant sleep at night.
tags?: fluff, enemies to lovers trope, that ONE TROPE WHERE THEY HAVE ONE BED ON A SCHOOL TRIP LOL, oneshot i think
"-and yn is paired with daniela." shit. "room keys will be handed out after dinner here in the lobby." the chaperone says, dismissing everyone with a wave of his hand.
you tighten your first, silently seething. of course, out of everyone, all 300 or some students attending the trip, you had to be paired with daniela fucking avanzini.
daniela. the schools popular fuckboy, who wasnt even a boy. your sworn enemy. pulling every damn girl and guy in your highschool. you swore you saw her with a new person every other day. you werent quite sure how she even did it. she wasnt thattt good-looking, right? you absolutely despised her. manifested on her downfall. you were jealous.
it all started in preschool.
you were sitting with yourself at lunch, eating whatever your mom had packed you that day. as you were mid food-to-mouth, or in another words, about to take a bite, your mouth closed down on nothing. you blink, looking at your fork, and then up. there she was. little daniela avanzini, with her curly hair and smug look as she chewed the last of your food casually, flashing you a grin.
your heart pounded. not from love, but from anger. your eyebrows furrowed. you glared at her with so much rage that a 4 year old could possibly have. the kind of glare that could scare a grown man away. but she didnt flinch. she just swallowed your food, grinning like shed won something, and walked away without sparing you a second glance. you hated her from that moment on.
even at 4 years old, she had a horde of little fans following her around, doing as she wanted. while everyone was staring at her with heart eyes, you were staring at her with fury. it wasnt like you were unpopular. in fact, you were pretty famous at your school too, but mostly for being rivals with daniela.
"hey. you alive?" you jump slightly, whipping around.
"oh hi jen. you scared me" you frown, not harsh.
"bro you were like- standing here shaking while staring at the ground for a solid 5 minutes." yunjin giggled. "you really that pissed?" she asks, gesturing for you to follow her.
"yeah dude, of course they had to pair me with avanzini. even the principal knows i dont like her." you snarled, following her to your friend group like a grumpy child. "i swear if i find the person who organized the rooms i will fucking conduct a gojo on them-"
"hi yn!" chaewons cheerful voice rang through the air peacefully, calming your rage.
"oh hi chae." you blinked, taking a few deep breaths to calm down as you gradually joined the groups conversation.
"i got grouped with chaewon" yunjin grins, throwing an arm over chaewons shoulder.
"yeah yeah, she signed us up for that actually."
"what?" you pause.
"huh?" chaewon tilts her head at your sudden question.
"yeah?" yunjin answers.
"not you, idiot. why did no one tell me you can sign up for rooms? if i knew i would have instantly signed up to stay so so far away from avanzini." you groaned in frustration.
"did you not read the email sent to you?" sakuras voice joined.
"bruhhh i was too lazy to. whatever. i dont know. ughhh."
"why didnt daniela sign up for someone?" yunjin asks.
"wait.. yeah, why didnt she?" you question, confused. "i know for a fact theres so much people wanting to room with her."
"oh yeah, she signed up to be in a room with you." a voice says from behind. you jump again, turning to find manon, danielas bestfriend.
"scuse me, what? she.. what??"
"mhm, i think she did it to.. piss you off? thats what i heard" manon shrugs, shooting you an apologetic smile for her bestfriend. "good luck then. ill be around" she says before passing by.
"dudeee what the fuckkk!!" you hiss, joined by your friends at the table in the diner. you angrily stab at your food, not bothering to make yourself look busy.
"why would she wanna room with you though?" kazuha asked cluelessly. "arent you guys enemies?"
"we are! so i dont know either" you whine slightly.
"calm down, yn. maybe it wont be that bad." chaewon says, her voice encouraging. "just avoid her i guess?"
"yeah.. guess i will. thanks, chae." you sigh, fully aware that you were just going to crash out later.
"-and here is your key. your room is room 129, in the left hallway." the chaperone nods, dropping the keycard into your hand, which was instantly snatched away by daniela, who turns to strut to the room. you follow her miserably, glaring daggers at her back.
the door opens. you peer inside.
fuck.
one bed.
one singular bed.
no couch.
no extra chair.
you were done for.
"ill sleep on the ground" you blurt out.
"awh, why? making me feel bad." daniela cooed in a mock sweet tone without looking back at you, heading inside the room to put her stuff down.
"in no life would i sleep on the same bed as you, avanzini."
"yes you will."
"what?"
"nothing."
"you piss me off, avanzini."
all you got in return was an almost inaudible chuckle as daniela plopped down on the bed, already choosing her side. you stood there stiffly for a second, contemplating what you should do. you slowly made your way into the room, body tense and brain irritated as you out your luggage down.
no words were exchanged as you heard the soft audio playing from danielas phone and the shuffles of your luggage.
4 hours later. it was 12am. you had taken a shower, read some books, and now you were sitting criss crossed on the carpet in your pajamas. just.. sitting there.
"dude, you gonna sleep there?" danielas voice cuts through the air, still a bit mocking.
"yeah, better than with you."
"yn, why do you hate me?"
"i-" you freeze. there was no reason.
"silly girl. come, join me. you sleep on that side." what you originally would have heard as an insult was somehow.. not. danielas voice wasnt sharp. wasnt teasing. wasnt playful. it was just- daniela.
after a few long minutes of contemplating, you finally move hesitantly. you make your way over to the bed, awkwardly sinking down into your side of the bed. you avoid any form of contact with her, whether that be physical or eye contact. fuck, the bed was comfortable. you stay as far as you can away from her, basically at risk of rolling off. she throws the blanket over you. your heart fumbles.
the night drags on. no words were passed. you couldnt sleep, silently cursing your insomnia for making you stay awake in such a position, danielas breath had evened out, signalling her sleep. 10 minutes passed. then 20. then an hour. you make a small groan of frustration, hoping only you heard that.
but you feel an arm drape around your waist. your breath hitches. like it hitches. you stop breathing. daniela pulls you close to her. and it makes you melt. you werent sure why you didnt resist.
"still awake, yn?"
"y.. yeah." you mumble, face furiously flushed.
"cant sleep? whats keeping you up?" daniela asks softly. and that scares you. her voice has never been this soft around you. you want to blame it being sleep-induced, but you know its not.
"insomnia, i guess." you whisper, although you were pretty sure it was because of her, body still tense against her.
"awh, that sucks, doll. always had trouble sleeping?" she cooes, finger tracing gently on your stomach. your heart fails you.
"mhm.." you hum, afraid that any longer response would be stuttered out.
she takes that as a sign to stop asking questions, knowing you cant respond. a part of her wants to giggle. point out how shy you were. but she keeps to herself, just gently drawing patterns on your stomach.
"yn.. i dont want to your enemy. i dont know what i did wrong in the past, but i do like you." she whispers quietly, her voice so genuine it hurt. "ill do anything for you.. ill stop hooking up with people."
you dont respond, just listening.
"i like you a lot, yn. didnt think stealing your food was declaring war." she mumbles , voice hinted with affection as she decides to leave it at that.
your rapid breaths gradually slow down to match hers, but before you eventually fell asleep in her arms, you mumble a small, "i like you too, dani."
the next morning, yunjin couldnt help but notice how calm you were. happy, even. and she especially didnt miss the intertwined fingers when the two of you first entered the hotel breakfast lounge in the morning.

heavy rain seemed to muffle gunshots as infected's bodies fell nearby. your horses raced through the blurry landscape, seeking dry shelter as eagerly as those riding them.
sophia swore up and down that the ride would be easy. an easy trail, nice weather, barely any infected. the universe seemed to have thought differently, however, as rain began to pour not even an hour into the commute. at first, it seemed bearable. daniela and you'd dealt with rain so many times—a few drops wouldn't kill you. then it got harder. then thunder struck in the distance. now the two of you were racing the impending flood.
"shop on your right!" daniela shouted out, shooting a stray runner who charged at her. directions changed as the horses began to run towards the shop, heading straight towards its closed doors. boards blocked the windows, the words 'closed for now' spray painted on one on the further right. tall grass and leaves sprouted near its entrance, splaying out across the exposed brick. above the door rested a sign. the words were barely visible, too overgrown to be fully read except for the words '& pharmacy'.
you hopped off your horse, jogging towards the door. there was a small chance it would even open, but it never hurt to try. with a push it opened at a surprisingly quick pace. you walked inside, leading your horse in with you. "it's open!" you yelled back towards daniela who lacked behind.
the inside matched its abandoned exterior.
plastic containers littered the floors, mixing in with the dirt and grime on the uncleaned wood. shelves were empty, only a few items left on them—definitely all expired food. it was dim inside, the only light showing through the cracks in the barricades and the open door. the place had been raided, no doubt happening close to outbreak day.
you moved through the open building, tying up your horse near the cash register. "good girl, sunny." you cooed, placing a few gentle pets on her head before deciding to venture off in the building.
water dripped on the floor as you moved, looking for anything valuable in the messy aisles. barely anything remained; anything left was just useless to you. maybe there was something, anything, to keep you entertained as the storm rolled over.
"oh shit."
daniela's voice rang out in the, mainly empty, space. your head quickly spun to find her, spotting her standing in a doorway. her back turned to you, only able to see her flattened brown curls and oversized jacket. "someone was living here."
her words made you perk up.
"what?" your question came out quick, your feet suddenly pulling you towards the door.
the room was exactly as how you'd imagine it. a makeshift bed lay in the corner, pillows and a blanket messily thrown over it. among the clutter were notes and pictures scattered in the mess. it would've seemed like a homey room—a place someone could've called home if it were not for the lingering question of 'why did they leave?'. you didn't want to know that, though. not now, at least.
daniela was quick, already shrugging off her jacket and tossing it in a random corner. she moved around the room, plopping down on the mattress like she lived there. she looked up at you, face blank as she spoke. "sit."
the simple command sent a shiver through you for whatever reason. you discarded the sopping wet jacket you wore, a chill running through your body as the wind that seeped in hit you. daniela looked up at you, her eyes unreadable, yet unwavering. as you sat down across from her, she took her gun out from its holster—fingers gliding over the safety lock to click it into place. your eyes stayed trained on the action, watching as her lean fingers moved over the weapon.
"so.. what's the plan?" her words snapped you out of your daze. she placed the gun down on the concrete floor, eyes never leaving yours. "plan?" you repeated, questioning what she meant.
"are we just gonna stay here until the storm rolls over, or do you have a better idea?" she reiterated, leaning back. her back hit the wall, hands splayed out in her lap. she looked so casual yet so.. enticing. you swallowed the lump that suddenly appeared in your throat. you hadn't even given it much thought. really, there was no logical reason you two would leave. it was pouring outside, and even if you began to consider it, thunder struck in the distance. "yeah, let's wait here for now." you reached near your belt, pulling the walkie talkie that rested there into your hands. "i'll keep this on just in case. maybe they can somehow reach us."
as you place the walkie talkie down, you don't miss how daniela's eyes moved to watch your hands, eventually moving up your arm and towards your face. "how long do you think we'll be stuck out here?" she inquired, her voice barely above a whisper.
a sigh left your lips, shrugging before you answered. "i don't know. could be an hour, could be six."
you couldn't even remember the last time you were alone with daniela for more than 10 minutes.
ever since you came to wyoming 4 years ago, you rarely saw her, even if you arrived in town around the same time as her. she always hid away, immersing herself in whatever new interest she could find. it always seemed to change every other week, but nobody ever pointed it out. the first time you two properly met, however, was because of sophia. she was your friend who was coincidentally dating daniela at the time, so it wouldn't be a shocker to anyone that she would try to get you two to become buddies. you noticed a lot about her during that formal meeting. the way she seemed guarded at first but softened around sophia, the way she awkwardly stood and watched while others spoke, the way she kept on avoiding eye contact with you. daniela tried to present herself as a tough and intimidating individual, but she just seemed awkward and almost dorky when you actually got to know her.
sophia and her broke up 4 months ago, but you maintained whatever semblance of a friendship you had prior with the two of them. sophia still hung out with you—she was like that. close with everyone. daniela barely spoke to you that first month after her break up, but ended up coming around to you after a while. you couldn't tell why. it wasn't like you were very close prior; her suddenly speaking to you again was odd. especially since she'd hang around you, acting nonchalant despite having actively sought you out.
and now.. now you two were forced to spend time together. how convenient.
you let out a long breath, eyes flickering down to your outfit. blood splatters. fuck. your clothes were freshly washed and now they were ruined. the once deep purple shirt you wore was tainted with the blood of the infected. all because of this goddamn storm.
daniela wasn't in much better condition either, but she didn't seem to mind. in fact, she didn't seem to care about anything but you in the moment.
by the time you finally looked back up at her, she was already looking at you—her gaze roaming over your hands, your legs, your face. that look alone was enough to make you gulp. it was intense, like a predator studying their prey, except she wasn't ready to pounce. she just rolled up her sleeves and-
there it was—the tattoo.
your eyes caught on it immediately, pulling your attention away from her obvious staring. laying beneath her loose long sleeve was a tattoo that covered most of her forearm. the black ink stood out from her otherwise untouched skin. leaves were drawn onto her arm, similar to the ferns you'd spotted around this area. laying within the detailed plant was an animal. a moth, perhaps? or maybe it was a butterfly? you never asked her; you don't think anyone has. the detailed artwork decorated her skin, pulling more focus towards her. it was intricate and well-drawn, as if it was done by a professional. but there were no tattoo artists in the town, so how in the hell did she get that done?
"your tattoo.. what is it?" you asked, eyes never leaving the design. daniela's eyes snapped to yours, following your line of vision to her shooting arm. "it's, uh, just some stupid idea i had. really, it's just some leaves and a moth." she brushed it off, trying to appear cool and composed for you. it was the truth.. mostly.
you hummed at her answer, nodding along. "it's nice." almost hesitantly your hand came out, reaching towards her arm. cold fingers touched her skin, tracing the outlines. daniela's heart banged against her chest, feeling her skin begin to heat beneath your fingertips. you'd leaned in closer, close enough that she could see every detail of your face up close. close enough to study you, close enough to feel your body heat.
"who did it?" daniela could barely register anything you were saying by this point—your words falling on deaf ears. all she could focus on was the tingle she felt when you touched her. "um, it wa- well, cora did it." she managed to choke out.
your fingers finished tracing the design, stilling on her skin. your gaze lifted from the tattoo to her face, seeing her flushed cheeks. it was cute, you would've commented on it had it not been for the way her eyes dropped down to your lips.
her intense, yearnful gaze remained on the feature, imagining how it'd feel against hers, how it'd taste, how soft-
you lifted your hand, cupping her jaw with one hand and bringing her view back up to your eyes. you matched her, gazing back at her with a similar intensity. subtly, your thumb came out to trace the corner of her lips, feeling the plump flesh.
she couldn't take it anymore. another second without her lips on yours and she would've gone insane.
daniela quickly captured your lips in a quick kiss. she hadn't even prepared to do it—she was just getting too impatient. as soon as her lips met yours, she second guessed herself. maybe you were about to reject her. maybe you were just teasing her. the thoughts alone made her pull back before you could even react, staring back at you with wide eyes.
she prepared herself for the worst. maybe you'd smack her in the face, calling her an asshole for even trying to make a move on you. or maybe you'd just scold her. but instead she found your lips on hers again, locking in a messy, yet still somehow passionate, kiss.
you cupped her cheeks in your hands, pushing your body closer to hers to deepen the kiss. the kiss was sloppy and uncoordinated but still managed to send butterflies straight to your stomach.
you pushed her back firmly against the wall, moving to sit on her lap. her hands came down, resting on your waist to steady you. daniela's hands snuck under your shirt, feeling the soft heat of your bare skin on her fingertips.
"daniela, come in. this is manon, over."
the crackle of the walkie talkie filled the otherwise silent room. "ignore it." you mumbled against her lips, tongue poking out to lick her bottom lip.
"this is important, where is your location? we're able to send someone out to get you." the talking paused, seemingly going silent over the other end. "don't ignore me, over."
you groaned, pulling away from her lips. you turned your head, looking at the discarded walkie talkie that sat on the other end of the mattress. "fucking manon.."
daniela's been crushing on you since forever. a planned party, a guy lingering for too long, daniela ending the night with a kiss. what she doesn't know is that you might feel the same way.

A/N || i was initially going to delete this because i wasn't sure how i felt but i've had this in my drafts for a long while and decided to just post. anyway i'll also post chapter 5 later on. kisses, brooklynn.
this was all daniela’s fault.
she was too quiet for her own good— too soft spoken, too in her head.
a girl with an increasingly strong crush on you and she couldn’t do anything about it
why?
because she was so very pathetic
at least that's what she told herself every time she saw her reflection in the mirror, glasses slipping down the bridge of her nose, cheeks always a tinted pink because she loved the perfume you used.
her mind went blank when it came to you, it didn’t matter how many times she swore she’d act ‘normal’ next time.
then you started to speak to her.
and she practically fainted
this had been her quiet obsession for months— she’d keep in the shadows while you lit up every room and made her heart ache, in the most unbearable way.
it sounded fair enough; you were everything amazing and she was the idiot who stared too long.
every time she heard your voice, her cheeks would heat up, she was convinced you could feel it radiating off of her.
sometimes she’d push her glasses up with the back of her hand to buy her time to think of a response— but really, what would she say?
what could she possibly say to someone like you?
you two were so different and she knew she was leagues below you.
what didn’t help her case was her huge staring problem.
you were typing out an assignment? daniela had already memorized the way your brows furrowed when you concentrated, the way your tongue poked against your left cheek when you were coming up with ideas, your frustrated groan when you couldn’t think of what to write next.
you didn’t know what to wear? that was fine, daniela already knew what you loved most, all of your favourites.
“those light wash low rise jeans and that small peach top you like,” she offered one afternoon, her eyes seeming more interested in the rug than your body. “said it fit you well.”
you tilted your head, staring back into the mirror with your plain long sleeve “how'd you remember that?”
you smiled— really smiled— and her heart almost fell out of her chest.
“i listen,” her voice was soft, she was afraid if she spoke too loudly she'd ruin whatever this was, whatever moment you two were having
but in reality?
she’d replayed every conversation you two had ever had since you'd befriended her.
maybe it was a tad bit psychotic but what’s a girl to do?
“you know.. there’s that party coming up,” you sing-songed, wiggling your brows teasingly
daniela stiffened, she hated parties, but not in the way everyone thought— too crowded, way too loud
no
she hated seeing others approach you while she stood by like some bodyguard
that you were too magnetic, too warm
she hated how people gravitated towards you immediately
not that she didn’t get approached herself— she absolutely did, the girl was gorgeous
she just didn’t care to engage while you were there
“so,”
“sooo.. wanna come with?”
daniela tried to avoid your eyes, 'please don’t look at me like that, please don’t look at me like that, please don’t look at me like—' and there it was, that face she couldn’t say no to
the one where you wore a devastating expression and began to pout your lips like you knew you’d get what you wanted regardless
“ah.. well— i just,” she scratched the back of her head nervously
“please?” you whispered
she nodded. immediately. violently. frantically. god your voice sounded so sweet
you giggled at her response, “it'll be so fun,”
she was so easy, but for you, she was always easy
daniela set up a few rules for herself— she’d only have one drink, she wouldn’t interfere with any of your conversations, and she’d stay invisible
except you walked out wearing something that caught her breath completely, the 'stuck in her throat she almost choked' type of breath
“so pretty,” she managed to say, earning a wide smile from you
when you two arrived, heads turned
daniela moved to the bar, asking for something strong because she knew she’d need it
and that’s when people started to try things with you, and daniela felt as if her whole world had just fallen apart
sure she was shy, wouldn’t say much, but that was only until jealousy hit like a truck and she couldn't tolerate anymore of it
she tried to focus on everything but you— her cup, everyone's shoes, the light fixtures
it wasn’t working too well, eyes always flicking back onto you and whoever was trying to entertain you tonight
you weren’t hers. she recited it like a prayer, because she had no right to be angry, and she definitely needed to calm down
“just go and talk to her, you're staring daggers at whoever glances her way,”
daniela had already ordered another drink, so much for only having one, she thought
“she doesn’t like me like that,”
her friend raised a brow, “are you sure? because from what i see, i think she likes you a lot”
daniela almost laughed, because hearing her friend say that was actually humorous “mhm, whatever you say,”
and after her second drink she was onto her third, showing off who she truly was— reckless, confident, everything someone would feel when they're three drinks too deep and the girl of their dreams is laughing at something not even remotely funny
daniela was way funnier
this guy didn’t even know anything about you.
he didn’t know your favourite songs like she did
he didn’t know the way you snorted when you were holding back your laughter
didn’t know that you hated lemon slices in your drinks. or even slept with your socks on
it wasn’t fair that he was the one getting to make you laugh
her stare grew darker, knuckles turning white as she gripped the cup
the party wasn’t what was loud, it was the thoughts that kept crowding her mind. you were talking to someone who was clearly flirting, and they weren’t subtle at all
her eyes lifted from the floor every time you laughed, every time he leaned in closer, every time you actually smiled at his words
her jaw flexed, she hated seeing you with anyone else who wasn’t her
daniela was a shy girl, she was quiet and private and kept a low profile
but jealous daniela?
she was an entirely different girl
you were too busy laughing at another stupid joke he made to notice daniela moving behind you
you suddenly felt a pair of hands snake around your waist, wrapping around you tightly
“hey, i was looking for y—” her hand grabbed your jaw, turning your face and crashing her lips against yours without another thought
she paid the guy no mind
you kissed back, engaging in the messy, tender kiss
she pulled away for a second, leaving small pecks, “dani i—”
but she cut you off before you could get a word out, kissing you like she was afraid you’d disappear if she stopped
you gasped into her mouth, shocked at her sudden possessiveness. such a sweet girl— but right now, you knew she was hotter than ever
he stepped back awkwardly, getting the hint
“damn..” daniela’s friend whispered from afar, watching everything unfold
she finally pulled away, realization hitting hard
she was horrified
shy daniela returned, the girl all panicked, out of breath, her hands were frozen becauds she wasn’t sure whether she should let you go or not
“i’m sorry—” she stammered, “i didn’t— i wasn’t— he was.. i mean— you were..” she trailed off, not knowing what to say
your lips were still tingling
“daniela,” you whispered, grabbing onto her hand before she considered running away from you
“did you just kiss me because you were jealous?” you teased, dragging out your words.
her face was now red
“i wasn’t— i mean, he.. he was too close to you and you.. you were smiling at him and laughing and i—” she swallowed. hard. “i couldn't take it,”
“so you decided to kiss me, in front of everyone?”
she nodded once— small, embarrassed, she wanted the ground to consume her whole
“yes,” she whispered, “because you're mine, or— at least i want you to be. if you want.. i’m not good with words,”
you smiled, stunned but thrilled nonetheless, “well, you're good with actions.” this time you kiss her, softer but still heated, enough to make her melt into your touch
“you like me?” she whispered, almost not believing that it was true
“daniela,” you laughed, “i’ve been trying to get you to kiss me for months…”
“but i thought.. i just.. you're so you and i’m so me, i thought i was making this all up in my head.”
“you weren't,” you pressed a kiss to her cheek, “and you’re cute when you get all possessive.”
she paused, “you liked that..?”
“baby, you grabbed my jaw in the middle of the party and kissed me like i was yours.”
her breath hitched, woah. “i didn’t mean.. to be so..”
“hot?” you finished for her,
“yes, hot,”
“if you want me to be yours…”
her eyes snapped up immediately, listening, “then we should probably go back to your place”
“…right now?”
“right now.”
her hand slipped into yours, daniela’s eyes glancing back at the guy, narrowing a fraction. her look was lethal, it was possessive
and her attention moved right back onto you in no time, where it had always belonged, no matter what happened.

your heels clanked against the shiny floors, fingers counting the dirty bills as you made your way to the office.
you knocked once, twice, three times. entering without permission.
you suck on the lollipop, sliding the cash over to a very intoxicated daniela. she exhales, letting the smoke fill the air. “fucking finally, i thought you were going to quit or something.”
you pull the lollipop out of your mouth with a pop. “mm, kay.” you reply, clearly unamused.
daniela grabs the cash, “how much?”
“enough.”
but she counts anyway, smirking when you’re $200 short.
“and the rest?”
“up your ass. that’s all i have.”
“rent isn’t cheap, i’ve been lenient baby, you pay or you’re out.”
you glare and lean forward, taking her cigarette and inhaling, before exhaling right in her face. “maybe if you paid me more, i wouldn’t have to rely on tips.”
“you’re the highest paid dancer.”
“if you think one thousand every two weeks can hold me over, imagine all the other girls. you’re paying us scraps as you laugh in our faces. if this is your payback, quit it.”
you two had unfortunately mixed lust and business, and daniela had a sour soul.
“i don’t make the rules, you pay what you owe or you get the fuck out.”
you smirk and walk out, slamming the door behind you.
your hand slides to your back pocket, fisting the two $100 bills.
fuck her.
you weren’t giving her all of your money.
you were clocking out for the night, you didn’t owe daniela anything. she was the one who scouted you.
you made your way to your apartment, tripping out of your heels and stumbling into the bathroom. hands touching your face, wiping away some of the smudged mascara. you glance at the polaroid photo of you and daniela. when you were happy and not swimming in debt.
she really ruined your life, if only you hadn’t gone to work for her. all daniela cares about is power and wealth.
but wealth can’t buy what power can.
you wipe a tear that fell down, taking a deep breath before you hear rustling behind you
“seriously? get the fuck out.”
daniela gets up from the couch, “what a nice welcome..”
“you don’t get to come in here anymore.”
she gestures to the spare key on the table, “had a key.”
“well now you don’t.” you swipe the key off the table and shove it down your pocket.
“if this is about earlier you know i’ll let it slide, i was just playing baby.”
you roll your eyes, unimpressed.
“it’s not about earlier, it’s about every fucking month. you always do this dani. what happened? do you really care about owning this club more than me? you’ve ruined me!”
daniela’s expression falters, and you catch a glimpse of her soft interior, her cold facade slipping away for a split second.
she tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear, hand lingering for a while, “you did it to yourself sweet girl. give me the rest of the money by tomorrow evening or you’re out.” she walks away, and you don’t turn around to watch, not even when you hear the door close behind you.

you storm right back to her office, walking in like you owned the place. daniela was expecting her cash but you were here for something different. you glance around the office, grabbing a dusty book off the shelf and raising a brow. “even your decor is for show, you’re all about being deceiving aren’t you?”
you throw the book onto the floor, followed by another one, and another one. daniela raises a brow, “the fuck are you doing?”
“having a little fun.” you trashed her office right in front of her eyes, before grabbing onto the door handle, “oh.. and i quit.” daniela stood up, “you fucking can’t”
“i just did.”

weeks pass and you’re doing better, dancing on your own terms and getting paid in full. no deductions, no illegal business.
daniela was drowning without you, the push and pull game now over, and she was miserable.
she grabbed the cup, the whiskey swishing around.
her dancers started leaving one by one, leaving her in debt herself.
daniela was losing it, she flipped the ashtray over the table, “fuck you.” she whispers at the polaroid she also kept, her eyes on your photographed ones.

you swipe the blush brush over your cheek, “told you it was better over here, you actually feel useful.”
your friend laughs, “you’re right, i was working my ass off for cents.”
“mhm, sounds about right.” you smile, about to continue when you were interrupted by a knock on the door.
you open it up, freezing in place when daniela stood on the other side. “what do you want?”
“it’s not worth it, it’s not worth losing you. i want you back.”
you place your hands onto your hips, “daniela avanzini begging for forgiveness?”
the woman gets down on her knees, hands on the sides of your waist. “please.”
you pretend to think, “hmm..”
daniela holds onto her breath, before you pull her back up, “i forgive you.”

daniela flashes a charming smile, “anything for you.”

the performance you and the girls had just finished was a hit — a sold out show with fans screaming along to every word.
it made you feel like you’d made it, and for that you all decided to have a celebratory dinner.
daniela and sophia sat across from you, megan, and lara.
your eyes scanned the menu, smiling at all the options — excited to try something new.
you felt daniela’s eyes on you, your eyes flickering up just in time to catch her lingering stare.
“what?” you ask, a small smirk grazed upon your lips.
she shook her head and looked back at the leather bounded menu, “nothing..”
you brush it off, about to change the subject when an all too cheery voice chirps in.
“hi girls! i’m amara, and i’ll be your server for today. could i get you girls started on any drinks? water? or maybe liquor if you’re feeling risky.”
she winked at you, daniela catching onto the gesture immediately, not knowing if that was intentional or just a small slip up.
you think for a moment, originally you were going to go for water but since the performance went well and the server seemed super friendly, you decided a small drink wouldn’t hurt.
the rest of the girls pass on their orders and amara returns shortly after with the drinks.
you thank her and begin to sip, while daniela just plays with her straw, stirring the water around.
lara smiles, “our show was amazing, it went so much better than i expected.”
you nod in agreement, “it was, i just want to do this again and again,”
sophia laughs, “yea, that crowd was something else.”
“it was the best feeling ever.” megan added, glancing at daniela
“what did you think dani?”
daniela looks at megan, “huh? oh, yea it was cool.”
amara came back, her notepad ready in her hands as she asked for everyone’s food order, turning when it came to you.
“and for you, pretty girl?”
daniela was visibly irritated, the server’s flirting was so obvious and the fact that you hadn’t caught on yet bothered her immensely.
“i’ll have the sushi.”
she writes it down in her notepad, “good choice babe, it’s delicious.. just like you i bet, is that the pink lipstick from mac? god i just want to kiss you, it’s so pretty.”
you couldn’t help but laugh at her words, “thank you.”
daniela couldn’t believe how you were behaving, she clearly knew the server was flirting, why werent you catching on as well?
her jealousy was increasing as the night progressed, getting her heated.
she asked sophia if they could leave but sophia only pouted, she was hungry and wished to stay until they finished.
amara came back with the food, lingering around the table longer than she should have, asking if everything was good, if everyone was enjoying their dish.
daniela’s grip on her cup just tightened every time the girl came back to say something.
“it’s super good.” you say, almost finished with your plate.
“super good food for a super pretty girl, i’m glad you enjoyed it, beautiful.”
you thank her once more, before daniela speaks up.
“you’re acting quite unprofessionally, you don’t have to pace by our table constantly and keep checking in, it’s honestly annoying.”
“it’s my j—”
“i don’t care. you don’t need to be around us all the time.”
amara only smirks, walking off to just come back minutes later. she reached out to ‘fix’ your cropped outfit, “oh my god, you’re so hot.” she mouthed, only for you to hear but daniela caught her words.
you giggle and thank her once more.
amara stayed, she’d comment things with nothing but flirtatious intent behind her words, you were clueless for your own good, just uttering small ‘thank you’s’ which daniela found pathetic.
amara twirled the blonde strand of hair around her manicured finger, batting her lashes every time you spoke.
daniela continued to ask sophia if they could leave, but it didn’t work out.
sophia was confused by her restlessness, but daniela knew her jealousy was uncontrollable now.
⋆˚࿔
when the bill was handed over, she grabbed a napkin and jotted her number down, sliding it over to you. “call me.” she mouthed, making a phone gesture with her hand. she collected the paid bill and sauntered off.
you all split up and walked to your respective vehicles, and you were with dani.
“she was so nice, i had such a good time.”
“yea? was it the way she twirled her hair or the way she spoke with nothing but sweetness?”
the question was rhetorical, you were able to tell that at least. but you didn’t sense the sarcasm in her voice.
daniela seemed to take her anger out on the road because she was speeding like no tomorrow, you bit onto your lip, you couldn’t help but sense that she was mad.
⋆˚࿔
daniela made it home in no time, not bothering with anything as she made her way inside. you followed, the napkin still in hand.
the rest made it home in a reasonable time, sophia immediately going to find daniela.
“hey.. is everything alright? you seemed pretty bothered and restless.”
daniela sighs, finding no point in lying to sophia, “i may or may not be a bit jealous..” she admitted, to which sophia smirked. “ah.. i see..”
“well why don’t you just talk to y/n, explain how you feel. i’m sure she’ll understand.”
daniela rolled her eyes at the suggestion, “no.”
⋆˚࿔
you hold the phone in your hands, lara holding the napkin. “should i?”
“i say go for it. you never know, and it’s not like you’ll lose anything by texting her.”
you pause, looking around before glancing back at lara. “i don’t know.. i kind of really like dani.. like a little crush..”
it wasn’t little though, you practically dreamt about times where you were together. wishing you were more but you knew it was just a dream, daniela had made it clear that she wasn’t into girls.
lara raised a brow, “the girl who strictly likes boys? yea okay.. come on y/n! she was so into you, it was insane. you need to text her.”
you smile and begin typing in her number before stopping, “i should probably talk to daniela first, she seemed pretty upset during the drive home.”
you make your way to daniela’s room, knocking softly.
“what?” you hear from the other side of the door.
“can i come in dani?”
she groans but agrees, and you push the door forward and enter. “are you upset with me?”
daniela crossed her arms over her chest, “what do you think?”
“well i’m really sorry, i didn’t mean to upset you. you know how much you mean to me, i would never do it on purpose.”
you sit next to the curly haired brunette, not wanting to let this ruin anything.
“were you really clueless, sweetheart? could you really not see her eye fucking you?”
your face heated at her pet name, but you were confused by her words.
“dani.. i don’t know what you’re talking about. what do you mean?”
she laughs when you say that, you really were clueless.
“do you not know how i’ve been dying to press my lips against yours? how every time we leave the house, i watch you extra close?”
you shake your head, your mind feeling fluffy. “you want to kiss me?”
“so. bad.”
“then kiss me.”
daniela crashes her lips against yours like she’s hungry, like you’d disappear if she didn’t kiss you hard enough.
you eagerly moan into the kiss, hands tangling themselves in her curls, before you both pull away to catch your breath.
“dani..” you pant out, breathless.
“i fucking love you.” daniela whispers
her confession was everything and more, you were beyond shocked.
her hands reached the hem of your shirt, “may i?”
you smile and peck her lips, “yes.”
she lifted your shirt off in one swift motion, following your bottoms, asking the same question to which you responded with an eager ‘yes’.
she pushes her two fingers onto the pad of your tongue, “suck.” she told you, to which you gladly obeyed.
you sucked on her fingers, eyes kept on hers. she couldn’t stop thinking about how pretty you looked.
she removed her fingers and trailed them down, rubbing your clit, “i don’t think she can get you as wet as i can, can she?”
you shook your head, soft moans escaping from your lips.
“i asked you a question.” she singsonged, teasing you.
“no. no she can’t..”
“good.” daniela slowly pushes her two fingers inside, prodding roughly. “you think she could make you feel this way? look at you.. all dripping and messy for me. she couldn’t ever get you in this state, isn’t that right?”
you let out more sounds, daniela was driving you crazy.
“fuck dani.. no, no.. only you.” you managed to utter out, your mind fuzzy.
your hips began to match her thrusts, her fingers increasing in speed.
“dani.. i’m close.”
daniela smirked at your words, “okay, and?”
“let me finish?” you whisper tauntingly.
“ask me nicely.”
“dani please..?”
she nodded and watched as you came undone on her fingers — a beautiful sight.
you couldn’t believe what just happened, it was everything you wanted.
but you weren’t done, you reposition yourself in front of her, kneeling as you brought her closer to you. she bit onto her lip and spread her legs open for you.
you lean forward and lap at her entrance, occasionally sucking on her clit, watching her practically fold.
her hands find their way to the back of your head, pushing you closer, her sounds too loud to contain.
you flick your tongue over her again and again, moving your mouth skillfully.
“so close..” she whispered, grinding her hips against you. “god baby, you’re doing so good.” she praised, bucking her hips once more.
and with that she finished on your tongue, laying back on the bed in satisfaction.

the bar is filled with low chatter, conversations going off in every direction and daniela’s group of friends turned coworkers are encouraging her to partake in a ruthless bet, something she wouldn’t have ever thought about doing before.
she wasn’t mean, but her group definitely was. she found herself falling under peer pressure, wanting to fit in, especially since she’d just gotten promoted to a higher position.
“seriously daniela, it’ll be hilarious!” Roni laughed, the front two pieces of her hair falling in her face. “you can’t turn down a challenge, you’ve got every single person wrapped around your finger except for her.”
yea, her.
y/n l/n. the one who worked a floor below her, the one who was always professional, never cared for work parties, and couldn’t take a joke.
the one with walls so high, that it was impossible for someone to be let in.
“you want me to get the only girl who won’t even glance at anyone twice, wrapped around my finger?” she almost thought it was a joke.
“not just that, get her to really fall for you. then maybe you can finally say she’s not untouchable, and that you officially have everyone wrapped around that finger of yours.”
the group agreed and daniela was even more confident, not wanting to back out of something she didn’t even start.
“what’s the bet then? get her to fall in love and then leave?”
Roni shook her head, “even better. get her to fall in love, sleep with her, and then leave.”
daniela bit onto her tongue, it was cruel, more than a joke or a harmless prank, but the group in front of her mattered more than some girl who worked a floor below her. “deal, you’re on.”
★彡
the office was cold, daniela had to go pick up a file on the main floor— the floor you worked on.
when you entered, head held high and attire without a wrinkle insight, something inside her stomach twisted, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the bet she had agreed to.
she shook it off, grabbing the file and ascending up the stairs, this wasn’t her. she wasn’t someone who made things messy. but popularity got her more, and she wasn’t going to mess up her opportunities.
★彡
daniela lingered by the elevator, pretending the button to go up wasn’t working, and right when you entered the building, she called you over. “uhm, y/n? do you use this elevator often? because i think it’s stuck.”
you lifted your head at her words, daniela avanzini asking for help. you were more than confused. you silently step over, the button working perfectly fine after you pressed it, “seems fine to me.”
daniela laughs to clear the tension, “must have magic fingers because it definitely wasn’t working for me..”
“maybe it was jammed, or something.”
“yea, maybe.”
daniela mentally cursed herself for the awkward exchange.
★彡
over the next week she’d bring you coffee, and ask for help drafting some emails to clients, little things that’ll eventually build into something bigger. she needed to start off slow in order for this to work.
“you don’t seem like the type of person who needs help.” you say, tilting your head as you help her with another email.
“i just never ask..”
you nod in understanding, you never asked for help either. maybe you and daniela were more alike than you thought.
“but i also needed an excuse to talk to you.” she smirked and turned to face you.
your brow was raised, daniela avanzini making excuses to talk to someone like you? it seemed out of place. so out of place that you laugh, “you’re ridiculous.”
daniela smiles, a genuine smile “i’ve been called worse.”
★彡
week after week it was the same routine, except now things started to feel more natural, more real. you went out to lunch together, you’d go out for drinks, until one night the liquor was all too tempting, and you both fell tipsy.
“we can’t drive back.” you whisper, to which the curly haired brunette agrees.
“let’s walk?”
you nod and walk hand in hand, like it fits, like this is what life is supposed to feel like.
when you reach your front door, you unlock it for the both of you to enter.
daniela tripped over the threshold, and you immediately hold onto her shoulders to prevent her from falling, your faces too close.
“you have to be careful..” you whisper, distracted by her lips.
“thanks for saving me..” she leaned in, stopping herself now wasn’t an option
you did the same, closing the gap between you two.
the kiss felt real. it was more than that, it made your mind all fuzzy and your heart swell with warmth.
daniela felt it too, her heart beating faster.
daniela didn’t expect to stay the night, she just wanted to make sure you got home safe and she figured an uber ride would be fine, but you were so convincing, and she couldn’t tell you no.
daniela absolutely didn’t expect to wake up wanting to stay, just you two. no work conflict, no one to impress.
★彡
weeks go by, the bet lingering in daniela’s mind like a ghost, something she avoids thinking about as you laugh next to her, laying on her chest and drawing soft invisible shapes onto her skin. it was over, she had slept with you and you were head over heels. you were comfortable, and she was starting to regret even getting into this mess. your heart wouldn’t be the only one she was breaking.
Roni groans impatiently, sticking loose papers into her folder, “you’re taking this bet way too seriously daniela, don’t tell me you actually like her..”
“please, as if.. she’s just good entertainment, and fun to mess around with. i don’t keep people longer than i need to.”
it’s a lie that tastes like regret and guilt, her heart hurts.
★彡
the next morning you decide to surprise daniela with something meaningful, a gift that was worth more than millions — a lipstick, the same shade you always wore, a deep red.
the one daniela complimented daily, the one shade she learned to love. because it reminded her of warmth and what was real, and you.
“my mom gave it to me before she passed, it was her favourite colour, i found an extra and thought you’d like it because i always catch you staring at mine when i wear it. she would want someone who appreciates the colour to keep it.”
you hand it over, daniela is speechless. she doesn’t deserve something so heartfelt. so beautiful.
she pecks your lips as a thank you, because those words themselves weren’t enough and it was the only apology she could think of.
★彡
the charity gala came sooner than daniela thought, her red dress fit amazingly and she was surrounded with her group. they were laughing about nonsense, the noise loud, cruel, but rich in success.
daniela didn’t know how to tell you the truth, how to tell you that you were just a bet that she developed feelings for.
“daniela, wear that lipstick she gave you, let’s see what your winning shade looks like.”
daniela didn’t want to, but popularity always convinced her to do what she disliked. she opened the gifted lipstick, putting on a layer.
the groups laughter stung, but old habits always win — she joins in, fake and bitterly.
Roni walked in late, waving daniela’s phone around, “guess what you left in the bathroom?”
daniela rolls her eyes, reaching for her phone only for Roni to step back. “not so fast.. i read through the texts. i knew you could pull it off, she wasn’t so cold after all.”
daniela’s heart dropped, “Roni, give it back.”
“why so eager? relax.. we all knew you’d win, i already broke the news. it’s over.”
fuck.
“you told her?”
“obviously, a bet is a bet, i’m not forcing you to do more charity work. you’re welcome.”
daniela’s expression was something she couldn’t miss, “you don’t actually care, do you?”
daniela snatched her phone back, making Roni stumble, turning only to be faced with you, eyes watery, guard back up.
“y/n.”
you see the lipstick on her, the cruelest joke she could’ve played.
“so i was just a game?”
“no you weren’t i—“
you turn before the first tear could fall, you slept with her. you let her into your world for it all to be a joke. she played you and you fucking let her.
★彡
days blur into weeks, daniela drifting away from her group because what was the point? they made her feel like she was always trying to reach their level, made her feel useless. she missed the late nights cuddling by your fireplace, the cups of coffee where you added one too many sugars, your warmth, just you.
she kept the lipstick on her desk as a punishment — reminding herself of her cruelty, of what she broke.
★彡
daniela couldn’t take it anymore, she walked to your place and knocked— it felt illegal.
you answer, surprised but your expression emotionless “what do you want?”
“to fix things.” she answers quickly.
“you lied to me. used me. broke my heart just to impress your boring friends. for fun.”
“it began that way, but it all stopped the moment i met you. the bet.. it was supposed to be a harmless prank, a joke. then you looked at me and it was like i forgot how to breathe.”
“you let your friends humiliate me.”
“i know.. and i’m so sorry, i’ll never forgive myself, but i love you y/n. i don’t care about the fancy positions, the opportunities, i just want you.”
you stay in silence for a while
daniela takes the lipstick from her purse, “i really shouldn’t have kept it, but it’s the only thing that’s ever made me feel like i could be worth something more.”
your glare softens, “you really did fall hard, didn’t you?”
“hard.. and i’m still falling everyday.”
“you should go home..”
you shut the door, not knowing if this was the end.
★彡
a week later you visited your favourite coffee shop, and daniela spotted you immediately, walking over. “i’m still upset.” you whisper, taking the coffee she offered you. “and you should be, but i’ll spend as long as it takes trying to make up for it. to make things right again.”
you smile and walk to a table, the sunlight glowing on your face. daniela’s hands reached over to brush against yours, the touch full of hope.

the hood of your car is shiny and sleek — dangerously modelled.
with your back arching, you lean against the hood, a burning cigarette lit in between your fingers.
illegal street racing was your calling.
why gamble at a casino when you can risk your life doing the same?
everything about you screamed adrenaline junkie, this was your space
daniela tipped her sunglasses down, eyes trailing over the leather shorts that accentuated your curves way too well, the cropped leather jacket you sported with only a black bra underneath didn’t help either.
her bubble gum pops, eyes flickering to cairo —her best friend.
“who’s that?”
cairo blinks in disbelief, “only the hottest racer ever. she’s well known around town, surprised you don’t know.”
“yea, never heard of her.”
“people say she got dumped tonight, i feel sorry for whoever’s going against her.”
daniela checks the crumpled paper, the wrinkles over the names and races and all the current bets.
and there her name was, beside yours.
“well if that’s y/n i’m fucking screwed, aren’t i?”
daniela strolled down to the main track — some secluded highway. she made her way through the crowds of people and finally stopped in front of your car, black and full of venom.
“daniela.” she extended her hand to shake yours, offering some kind of camaraderie before the big race — sportsman ship if you will.
you exhale the smoke, a taunting smirk on your lips. “come again?”
“daniela avanzini. we’re going against each other in about an hour.”
you laugh in her face— a cynical sound that made her heart drop.
“sweetheart, we’re talking about racing here, not church choir. did daddy forget to pick you up?”
daniela scowled at your words, “i’m well aware actually, my cars that pretty little red thing lined up. intimidated?”
“you wish. you know it’s not too late to forfeit, you’re going to embarrass yourself.”
daniela scoffed at your words, her red leather jacket cold against her skin.
“you’re too proud, don’t let it get to your head.”
you inhale the smoke, blowing it out into the dark sky, “avanzini, you aren’t familiar with my game. did daddy never teach you about consequences? s’pose not, but that’s why good girls always learn the hard way, don’t they?”
you throw the cigarette onto the gravel, squishing it beneath your shoe, “i hope you know how to use your hand brake, avanzini.”
⛐
the flag girl shimmied with excitement, “are you guys ready?!”
the crowd erupted into cheers and chants, beer spilling out of cheap red cups.
“on your mark!”
the sound of engines revving loudly could be heard, your eyes focused on the brightly lit road ahead of you.
“get set!” her flags waved side to side, “and…. go!”
she put the flags directly down, both of you speeding past the poor girl. you were seconds ahead, daniela catching up surprisingly quick.
it wasn’t until daniela got in front of you that you began to lose it. you made a quick turn, the wheel spinning flawlessly.
both of you were side by side, the checkered finish line up ahead, one last turn to go.
you didn’t want to risk it, so you turned your wheel, cutting daniela off entirely.
she pulled on her hand brake instantly, her body jerking against the seat. “bitch!” she yelled, slamming her hand against the dashboard.
you cross the line in under two minutes, hearing the ones who placed bets go wild. daniela circled back, getting out of her car. “she cut me off! that’s cheating.”
the guy shrugged, “the cameras don’t show anything.. i’m — i’m sorry but i can’t prove—“
“she could’ve killed me! how did your cameras not pick up on that?!”
“now let’s all settle down, i don’t recall cutting anyone off besides my ex avanzini, nice try.”
“you’re dirty.”
“dirtiest player of ‘em all, baby.”
daniela rolled her eyes with immense annoyance, “good game. you gave me a challenge, i appreciate that.”
you almost laugh— god was she serious?
“you were just a warm up, i have actual competitors to get to.”
daniela’s lips parted slightly, she couldn’t believe how awful you were.
⛐
the races only took place once a year, and daniela was going to avenge herself and clear her name.
she wasn’t your loser, she was far more than that.
cairo propped up daniela’s car with the jack, checking her tires. “they’re totally busted.”
“fix them for me?”
“obviously. but be careful.”
you linger around daniela’s known sporting garage, wanting to see what daniela had up her sleeve this year.
“cairo, baby? long time no see.” you smile and hop up on the tool bench, grabbing the wrench. “say.. did daniela tell you anything about the car? like.. extra placements? anything she’s getting done?”
“i— uhm, well.. fuck y/n, you know i can’t tell you..” she stuttered, twisting the tire off.
“not even a hint?” you reach over to the thin strap og your top, pushing it off your shoulder sensually.
cairo’s breath hitched, her blue eyes hypnotized.
“promise you won’t tell?”
“cross my heart, hope to die.”
cairo looked around, the sounds of the city rushing past heard behind her.
she got up and moved in between your legs, “she didn’t tell me everything..”
you lean in closer, feeling her breath against your lips, “mhm..”
“i think she’s getting a few modifications on—”
“cairo.”
she jumped, hiding the tool behind her back, “dani, jesus— you scared me.”
“are you working on my car or fucking a bitch?”
you whistle and place the wrench back in the box.
“hi to you too.” you wave mockingly, fixing your strap.
“yea, fuck off.”
you giggle at her state, “still pent up about last year’s events? get. over. it.”
“you’re bold, coming to my garage and bothering people?”
“well cairo, my deepest apologies for bothering you, guess i better be heading out now.”
cairo sighed defeatedly, “it’s fine.”
you saunter away, exiting the garage in a swift motion.
daniela crossed her arms over her chest, “cairo. what the fuck?”
“she doesn’t know anything.”
“and if i hadn’t walked in she would’ve!”
“dani! i’m not your strongest soldier, okay? i’m sure if you got your head out of your ass you would realize that she’s smoking hot. was i supposed to say no?”
“yes!”
cairo muttered something under her breath, shaking her head dismissively.
⛐
daniela practiced almost every night, mapping out the route. she finds you propped over the bleachers, quietly observing the night sky.
she stepped up onto the steel structure, grimacing when it squeaked under her weight.
“following me?” you mumbled, gaze strictly on the moon.
“no. what’s it matter to you.”
you flick the ends of your cigarette, “don’t know.”
“no remark? no stupid insult?”
you exhale, “no, what’s it matter to you.”
“touché..” she followed your gaze, “so.. you come out here often?”
daniela wasn’t sure why she felt bad for you
“look, i’m done with the push and pull. alright? last year i was an asshole, i got dumped and took it out on you. and i did cut you off, and it was dangerous. so i’m sorry.”
daniela’s jaw dropped, she was at a loss for words.
“apology accepted.”
the silence became comfortable, just realness and forgiveness.
⛐
“get in.” you honk twice
daniela had agreed to spend a day out with you
maybe make amends..
she wasn’t too sure but the weight lifted now that she knew you weren’t praying on her downfall
“where to?”
“the lakeside.”
the car halted by the lake, the water flowing along with the breeze.
you sit on the log of wood, skipping rocks.
“you ever think you’re made for more?”
“not really. i’ve always been passionate about racing, it’s the only thing that’s truly mine.”
you glance back at her with a genuine smile, “cute. i just had a crisis one day and decided risking my life wasn’t scary anymore. having the world cheer for you while you’re at it makes it better. it’s where i belong and i don’t care if i die playing the game.”
daniela took your words to heart, sitting next to you.
“why’d they dump you?”
“found someone better.”
“i think they lost the prettiest girl there was.” she muttered, the silence too loud in her ears.
⛐
“didn’t you say these ruin exhausts?”
“they do.”
“so why would you want one?”
“because it looks hot, and my car deserves it.”
daniela laughed, “you’re ridiculous.”
“me? you named your car after a disney character.”
“minnie mouse is cute!”
you walked over to the different wraps, the black wrap you had was matte, you wanted something sharp and blinding. “whatever helps you sleep at night.”
daniela raised a brow, “you’re acting like i committed an awful crime.”
“you did, naming your monster of a car minnie mouse is the most horrendous act possible.”
“oh give me a break.” she shoved you playfully, shaking her head.
⛐
you glance out at the view, the sound of gravel under tires being the only thing present.
you blow out the smoke, catching daniela’s wandering eyes. “what?”
“you know that’s bad for you, i don’t think racing is going to be the thing you go for.”
you chuckled— she was quite amusing.
“yea? and who’s going to stop me? you?”
“i couldn’t care less..”
“cared enough to bring it up.”
“it’s just— it’s really bad.” she moved closer, glancing at the cigarette before staring into your eyes.
“i like being bad.” you whisper, lips almost touching.
“i know.” daniela pressed her lips against yours, she was playing a dangerous game.
⛐
“ready?” daniela guides you with her hands around yours eyes, “step a little more to the left.”
you do exactly that, “if i fall i swear i’ll—”
“open!” she cuts you off, taking her hands off your eyes.
the outdoor patio was adorned with lit candles, set up with all your favourites, including a small bottle of disgustingly expensive champagne.
“dani..” you look at the effort, all the time it must’ve taken — too bad this was all for show.
“you shouldn’t have.”
“i wanted to. i asked you out, i had to do it properly.”
“it’s gorgeous.”
“it reminded me of you.”
⛐
daniela grabbed the movie, sticking the cd into the dvd player. “you coming?!”
“i’ll be there in a minute!” you stood in her garage, nail gliding against the red paint “poor thing.”
you unlock the car, the plush interior warm and inviting.
you only came here for one thing. you needed to disable her brakes— all of them.
you’d done it before, years ago. this is what you wanted.
get close to daniela so she suspects nothing. it was a infallible plan, was it not?
you cut what you needed and left things as they were, immediately joining her upstairs for the movie.
⛐
the day of the race came quickly, daniela didn’t care about winning. she had you now.
she leaned over the roof of your car, puckering her lips. “kiss?”
“for?”
“good luck..?”
“baby, you’ll need the luck, i just won’t be the one giving it.”
cairo wrapped her arms around your waist in a possessive manner, daniela blinking in confusion. “i don’t get it..”
“did i forget to tell you? god how silly of me.. cairo and me are a thing now, it’s sort of last minute.”
“but what about—”
“everything we had? it was a fun game, i was surprised you played along so well.”
“so i meant nothing to you? all the times we had were just a game?”
“you’re a smart thing, now aren’t you?”
daniela bit onto her tongue, “fuck you.” her voice was laced with pure hatred.
“love you too.” you got in your car, ready to win the title this year as well.
daniela was shocked, her anger fueling her game. she was going to win.
the flag girl gets prepared, smiling as she waves them. “go!”
you speed up instantly, daniela on your bumper, she slightly hits it, you groan in anger.
she passed you in no time, her skill definitely improved. maybe you underestimated her.
the back and forth was intense, too intense, the last upcoming turn was soon and daniela began to brake to be able to safely clear it.
press.
the car didn’t stop, daniela pressed again and again.
one. two. three times.
she lifted the hand brake, “fuck. no no no.”
she tried everything, but it was no use. her car quickly collided into the barrier, flipping it upside down.
you’d won the race, but at what cost?
⛐
the cheers were louder than the thoughts clouding your head, but when daniela didn’t circle back, whispers could be heard.
“someone call an ambulance!” a girl shouted, pointing to the burning car.
you paused to look, your heart dropping. this wasn’t how it was supposed to go. she wasn’t supposed to let herself die.
she needed to get out of that burning car.
you raced over, coughing at the smoke. “daniela?” you open the broken door and unbuckle her belt, grabbing a hurt daniela. “dani?” you put your ear on her chest to see if you could hear something — anything.
“daniela wake up.” you yell, slightly shaking her. “wake up.” your voice cracked, the weight of your actions heavy.
“why didn’t you just attempt to turn? why didn’t you turn.”
tears streamed down your face. she wasn’t supposed to die. she was supposed to just get injured.
“daniela. please.” you shook her again, horrified.
“please.”
but it was too late— a lifeless daniela laid in your arms, and there was no going back.
