About the painting: “Duality and transformation are themes I keep returning to in my work. Beauty isn’t always perfect - in fact, it almost never is. We are in control of our destiny - yet have no control at all. I weave my figures into abstract environments where they are pushed and pulled by time and fate. Much of the story is in the brushstrokes and visual rhythms. I try to infuse the start of every painting with as much movement and energy as possible - adjusting and scraping the paint as it dries. I then glaze many subtle layers of colour to create depth and luminosity. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated with the mythology and folklore of different cultures. In Japanese Folklore, Kitsune are powerful and intelligent fox spirits that possess the ability to shape-shift into human form. The more tails a Kitsune has - they may have up to nine - the wiser and more powerful it is. I focus as much on how my paintings come to life as the finished product.
