“Seriously, Danielle,” Armand mutters as she runs her hands through Danny’s curls, working in a flowery-smelling hair oil. Something expensive, Danny’s sure. “This hair is just a mess.” She shakes her head disapprovingly, parting it down the middle.
“It looks fine,” Danny retorts, to no avail, Armand just continues, her nails gently raking over Danny’s scalp.
“We’ve got big plans with important people,” she explains, “you want to look better than fine.” Danny huffs and leans back into Armand’s touch.
“I’m going to braid your hair,” she explains. Danny grunts in acknowledgment, “that means sit up. Be a grown up.”
“It’s eight in the morning! It’s too early to look neat!” Danny complains, burying her head in the blanket in front of her.
“You’ve been awake an hour and a half, Danielle.”
“That’s even worse!”
“Every day,” Armand mumbles to herself, “the same nonsense every day…”
“I can do my own hair, you know,” Danny says, sitting up, “been doing it for, like, twenty five years.”
“You use a men’s three in one shampoo. You smell like head and shoulders,” Armand points out, tying Danny’s hair up with ribbon. She sighs, staring ahead into the vanity mirror at the foot of the bed.
“I look like… a doll.”
“The ribbons?” Armand asks, tilting her head, “over the top, do you think?”
“Like a lesbian Barbie.”
“I’m removing the ribbons.”
“Why?” Danny jokes, turning her head to look at Armand, “you’re not into the sexy fashion doll type?”
“Typically I go for subpar assistants,” Armand replies, taking down Danny’s hair.
“Typically?” Danny feigns hurt, “Is that all I am to you? Just your type?” Armand laughs, pressing a kiss to the crown of her head,
“Absolutely.” She nods, “the umpteenth assistant, one of many.”
“Yeah?” Danny leans back against her girlfriend, “am I at least your favorite?” Armand is quiet for a second, pretending to think.
“Mmm,” she starts, “top five, at least. Maybe top three.”
“Sweet.” Danny grins,
“It is.” Armand nods finally. “I am.”
