I stumbled across an article featured on Harper’s Baazar titled The Best Fashion Documentaries on Netflix. My two favorite things: fashion and Netflix. I always find ways to learn more and expose myself to fashion so I thought that this would be another way to do so. I went through the list of recommended documentaries and found myself intrigued by these three films:
ULTRASUEDE: IN SEARCH OF HALSTON
There was no particular reason as to why I decided to watch these documentaries, in a way they kind of just stood out to me. I learned something different with watching each film and found myself falling more in love with fashion. Below, I’ll provide a brief description of each documentary to help pique your interest.
The first of the three films that I watched was Advanced Style. Advanced Style is a documentary featuring seven fashionistas ages 60 and older living in New York City. This documentary was a reminder that style does not stop because of age. Expressing yourself through clothing is one of the best things you can do for yourself because it truly reflects who you are and how you feel. I was inspired by this film in that it made me realize that I have so much to live for and that this is just the beginning of my journey through fashion.
The next documentary that I watched was Unzipped. This was a film follows Isaac Mizrahi during the process of creating his 1994 runway collection. My favorite part of the film is when Isaac Mizrahi explains that his imagination is his greatest tool. Many designers fly out to exotic places to find inspiration, however Isaac has found a way to be inspired just by using his own imagination. The way that the documentary was filmed was so candid and real that it made me feel like I was watching a home video. It definitely added a genuine touch to the film.
Lastly I watched Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston. This documentary was my favorite out of the three. The 70’s is probably one of my favorite eras of all time. I am so fascinated by the lifestyle, music and fashion that was created during this time. I was never aware of Halston until watching this film and did not realize how much of an impact he had made in the fashion world. Halston had such an eye for fashion and knew what worked and what didn’t. He designed the infamous pillbox hat for Jackie O. and made the minimalistic look a trend (a style in which I favor most). I was very much entertained when watching this film.
I highly recommend that you all watch these documentaries. I gained so much knowledge within such a short period time. Let me know what you think of them, enjoy!
