SEE REALITY IN YOUR EYES WHEN HATE MAKES YOU BLIND
- AMERICAN HISTORY X
i'm really interested to know what you think your most unpopular opinion is and why
wow that's a hard one ummm?? i don't know. i think maybe that getting so angry over things does more harm than good. i don't mean just social justice either, even if i have that opinion on occasion (but i do also know that a lot of the time, there isn't much of an option for people but to get angry and that sometimes it's the only way to get through to some thick-headed people). i mean it just in general, though.
there's this common belief on tumblr that you don't owe being nice to anyone at all, and that if you want to be negative and rude about anything, really, it's your own right. and to a point, i get that. self-empowerment and not owing kindness to anyone and having opinions and beliefs and being aggressive about them is something i can understand on a certain level, but everyone just takes it so far. people get a free pass to be really, really cruel and mean because they "don't owe anything to anyone." if someone isn't informed about a certain social justice thing, or if someone doesn't agree with you about a television show, or if something you do is something that someone else doesn't agree with - anything that you can get defensive about, really - it's believed to be completely okay to be really rude and vicious.
idk. to me it's just unnecessary and seems to just breed more negativity than anything. if being aggressive and rude feels like the only option because they've been really terrible to you or whatever, i can understand that, and to a point i know why people get defensive aggressively. but i also think that it's kind of dangerous to give people free passes to be mean all the time because "you don't owe anything to anyone"
So I guess this is where I tell you what I learned - my conclusion, right? Well, my conclusion is: Hate is baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time. It's just not worth it. Derek says it's always good to end a paper with a quote. He says someone else has already said it best. So if you can't top it, steal from them and go out strong. So I picked a guy I thought you'd like. 'We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.' - Danny Vinyard
