Valentina stood in the entrance of her closet, watching Dan as he rummaged around in it. He’d shown up an hour ago all dressed up to convince her to go out with him that night, but Val was exhausted, and no matter how hard he begged she was determined not to give in. She knew she took stubborn to a whole new level, and she was confident that she could dissuade him. All she wanted to do was stay in and relax for the rest of the night, and as his hands kept pawing through her clothing, she asked, “What exactly are you doing?”

Don’t Call Me Your Woman | Dan & Valentina

“It’s no frittata, but it’ll do.” Val walked over to the pot of chili that stood cooking on the stove, opening the lid and setting it aside. Instead of plates, she had individual bags of Nacho Cheese Doritos sitting atop the island in the center of her kitchen. Laying out beside the bags were bowls filled with different ingredients for tacos: sour cream, shredded cheese, hot salsa, etc. She turned in Dan’s direction and told him, “Alright, this is how my own lower-middle class family did things back when I was a kid.” She walked over to the island and picked up one of the bags, keeping it closed as she crushed up the chips inside. When they were sufficiently crumbled, she opened the bag and instructed him by saying, “Now you throw some chili and whatever toppings you want in and use a spoon to mix it all up, and you can eat it right out of the bag.” Her doorbell chose to ring at that exact moment, and with a groan Val put her bag down and said, “Get started without me, I’ll be right back.”
