Daphne Wright: Emotional Archaeology
Daphne Wrightâs work manoeuvres things into well-wrought but delicate doubt â shifting between taughtness and mess, it sets imagery, materials and language in constant metaphorical motion. Using a wide range of materials â plaster, tinfoil, video, printmaking, found objects and performance â she creates worlds that are beautiful and rather eerie which feel like the threshold to somewhere new.
Daphne Wright
Daphne Wright is an Irish sculptor who makes sculptural installations using fragile materials such as tin foil, unfired clay, and plaster. She is inspired by transitory periods in life- the cusp between childhood and adulthood, the balance between life and death. This definitely reminds me of the theme of temporary. A day is just a collection of temporary moments transitioning from one to the next.
The main symbols that she uses are animals, plants, and domestic imagery. Animals and plants have a shorter lifespan than the humans they represent. Rendering common household items such as a buggy or clothes horse in unfired clay creates tension between the familiar and the fragile, evoking fleeting memories. This makes me think of my work- I wonder if I could make some objects from a similarly fragile material, and watch them waste away in front of me?
