Dappled webcap (Cortinarius bolaris)

This immature webcap that I accidentally kicked over is poisonous, although not as dangerous as the deadly webcap (Cortinarius rubellus). The origin of the common name is obvious when you look at young specimens, as a web-like veil, known as a cortina covers the gills, which will tear open as the specimen matures, leaving remnants around the stem.

Dappled Webcap

These twined Dappled Webcaps, Cortinarius bolaris (Cortinariaceae) show the typical appearance of the mature cap of this species, characterized by pinkish to brick-red scales on a paler white ground. 

As was pointed out in a previous post, this uncommon mushroom, which occurs in America and Europe, is regarded as poisonous.

Dappled Webcap

Cortinarius bolaris (Cortinariaceae), the Dappled Webcap, is a species of mushroom found in mixed woodland, particularly under beech and oaks, with which it is mycorrhizal. It can be found in Britain, Ireland, mainland Europe and parts of North America.

Cortinarius bolaris has quite distinctive red-dappled cap, especially in older specimens where the cap surface breaks up into annular rings of reddish scales on a buff background.

This mushroom is reputed to be poisonous, and it could easily be confused with some of the other reddish webcaps that contain orellanine and are known to be deadly poisonous.
