Pandora Positivity- A New Neck of The Woods
Pandora huh? Where do I start? Maybe back in October ‘13 when I had little to no experience in writing and recklessly jumped into the deep end like my soon-to-be character Eren Jaeger would have. I found out about this place when at a convention with my friend Fash, and immediately took down the URL for future investigation, signing up and writing an app right in the middle of some important exams like an irresponsible near-16 year old.
What I found was something unique in both community and creativity, not to mention aesthetics. But I was hesitant to begin writing and mixing with the arts when I had always been one to dive into a stellar astrophysics book instead of one by Susan Hill or Jane Austen (now my favourite authors!), and was constantly reminded by my English teacher about my limited imagination. I found I was wrong to second guess the compatibility as I soon began to mix with the Pandoran community, discovering music teachers, history majors, chemistry majors, media students, English students and many more; I felt more than welcome. Right then I found that writing really was something anyone could do with the right enthusiasm and determination, even someone like me with no experience, because I was willing to learn on top of my studies.
A year and a half later I’m happy to say that writing is now my main hobby beside astronomy and that I’ve made online friends across the world thanks to Pandora. I’m also planning a science fiction series to write during my time in university in a few years as my interest had been piqued thanks to role playing and the variety of genres and techniques I have seen used across the board. Being one of the youngest on the site is also quite daunting seeing as though everyone has a lot more experience and have been role playing from a young age, but it only makes me want to strive to a higher level and keep on improving. Nonetheless it’s all fun and exciting, especially when you have the power to bring a character to life and see how it really is the little things that make the biggest difference. Not only have I learnt to appreciate other ideas and opinions, but I’ve also developed myself along with my character, learning by both his mistakes and my own.
Oh, and that “limited imagination” I had? It’s been replaced with one I’m happy to call my own, and I can’t thank Pandora enough. I hope for many more great years to come.
Fun fact: My first piece of serious fictional writing was the sample in Eren’s first app! -Darbox
