Yesss! I literally cried in frustration because so much of the fic is stuck on that moment, and I happen to really hate how that episode played out.
With the caveat that it’s been a really long time since I’ve seen it, I was EXTREMELY annoyed by Foggy’s reaction. I know he was concerned for Matt but he really had a way of making it feel like it was about himself. Didn’t try very hard at all to understand where Matt’s coming from. He didn’t have an open mind. And like, what, you think Matt can control his ability to hear???
I mean, being upset about that superpowered level of “eavesdropping” is valid, being upset about your best friend putting themselves in danger is valid, being upset about lies is valid, but there was just something about how he expressed that that really rubbed me the wrong way. And there’s something uniquely frustrating about validity that’s executed like shit. One of my big things about it is that Matt wasn’t really given any space to explain himself. What I thought was going to be a cool soul-baring experience we rarely get on TV didn’t happen. Just another argument.
I mean, I don’t know about anyone else, but when I find out someone I love has endangered themselves, my reaction isn’t “FUCK YOU” and being an uncompromising dick. Mostly it is concern, crying, and attempts to understand and work through why they did this and how I can talk them towards not doing it again while trying to fix the root cause. From what he says about him to other people Foggy should understand much better what he should and shouldn’t have done in that conversation. But he didn’t.
Like I know this is realistic behavior, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t annoy me. It wasn’t even particularly compelling either. There are so many other ways that Foggy could have been angry that would have been more interesting. Chuck McGill from Better Call Saul is a cunt, but he still manages to make extremely compelling conversations both because of and despite his realistically shitty qualities.
Like, everyone trumpets Foggy as the perfect cinnamon roll (absolutely bonkers to me because he literally spent most of season 1 as Matt’s less moral foil that was more interested in cash than justice, not that I dislike him) while meanwhile he is self-righteously yelling at a half dead crying dude??? I don’t understand fandoms anymore????
People are soooo mega fast to shove characters into the same like 3 boxes every time they find a new fandom and it’s bizarre. And all that just makes me push back that much harder against the episode.
What REALLY irks me about it all is that now because of that ep (though mostly it’s because of fandom climate just with that ep as the catalyst), 80% of the Daredevil fandom has taken the same stance that much of the Supernatural fandom has about Dean: They’re only heroic because they’re fucking stupid, and everyone around them knows better.
Overall I just don’t understand why people are content in putting out such airy, inconsequential content. I don’t get the lack of pride in what you put out for the world to see. It’s such a waste of people’s time. There are so fucking many of these and I haven’t even seen a single one take the argument in a pro-Matt direction. It’s so goddamn lazy.
It’s like someone 16+ pulling out their sketchbook to show off to you, but it turns out it’s full of tracings. Like wow, you really loved that manga cover enough copy it verbatim, but why are you showing me again?
