Darling, be daring. In a world where conformity reigns, be the bold flower that stands out. Let your uniqueness flourish, darling. Be daring.

Darling, let your spirit bloom and watch as your daring dreams take flight. Be daring, my love.

according to the pamphlet you picked up, twin lakes is the 34th most haunted city in america. it doesn’t seem like the kind of thing you should put on a pamphlet, but hell, being thirty-fourth at anything is sort of a comforting notion to you. fits with the vibes.
the vibes, of course, being rancid. like the facts of the case: a native of revachol, visiting twin lakes, found dead in a pool of rainwater, drowned with barely a half-inch of liquid under him.
ESPRIT DE CORPS: a lean man with a beard scratches at his jaw, peering at the map of revachol’s grand-couron. mutters under his breath. swears to god that if someone goes on a bender again, he’s going to shoot him himself. behind him, a man in an orange bomber jacket almost smiles. concern on his face. “he was remarkably sober during our case,” orange bomber jacket points out, perfectly at ease.
the lean man gnaws on his lower lip and says nothing, doubtful.
it’s tradition here to name the cases too, like back home. you saw that when you came in. it feels like pressure, but maybe you should take charge. the necktie tightens around your throat by a few centimeters, and you pull at it slightly.
DRAMA: exactly, monsieur! a whole new city to inflict your wonderful expressive mind upon!
VOLITION: no. make a good impression. a professional impression.
“detective mcqueen,” you say. “i saw that you name your cases here, and we do the same. do you have any ideas?”
yes, that’s good. ask first. let him set the tone, then propose some ideas. kim did not like some of your more inventive ones. furies in the mirrors. no. the hanged man is what the case is now in rcm records. sometimes you still think it was rather dry. really doesn’t begin to explain the full breadth of the case.
@daringdarling : 8 & 9! oc asks. not accepting.
8. how did you choose the name for your muse? i wanted christian to be named very ironically. even before creating abel abernathy, i wanted to imply that the discrimination against vampires (and other non-human species, as raylan and i are developing them) came predominantly from hyper-religious individuals who could see these people as demonic or negative in nature. however, because i know that not every religious person is evil, especially not every christian person, i wanted christian to come from a background like that, a religious one, and that part of his identity is stripped from him with his trauma and lives on in his name. his parents were good, religious, hardworking southerners, and they wanted to instill that in their son. it wasn’t their fault a monster masquerading as a man of faith took that from him.
9. if your muse could be a canon character in any fandom, which fandom would you choose? i feel like christian could fit in really well in any universe where there were standing vampires already? so you’ll probably see him in things like the vam//pire dia//ries, the ori//ginals, things like that, but he also has this overwhelming motif of justice, law, and order, so you could easily see him fitting in with teams like the cri//minal mi//nds cast, the just//ified cast (which i am now watching because of jacob pitts smh my head), n/c/i/s, etc. his vampiric nature might have to be suspended in those non-fantasy worlds, but i wouldn’t mind.
@daringdarling left a note: dying just to escape fate. stupid. boring. ( alice quinn. )
there has been a death at brakebills. possibly a murder; possibly a suicide. it must be said: murder itself is droll. kim kitsuragi knows this. there are particular facets that might be unique. the method. the way the body is found, and possibly even posed. in this case, the location itself might hold some meager interest. it is not every day a student dies under suspicious circumstances. yet in the larger scheme of things the practice of magic is, in itself, inherently dangerous.
kim kitsuragi remains quiet for a moment. he taps his foot idly. less impatience at this moment and more just deep in thought, staring up at the grand facade of the building. stately. old. secretive. he is not a hedge witch. he learned at a university across the country. but sometimes he looks at these old buildings and thinks to himself, ever so idly: what is the point of this? people will obtain knowledge any way they can. hedge witches have been shown to learn on their own, often in adverse ways.
the detective is thinking, ever so casually, of a publicly funded university for magic. then he shakes off the quaint thought and frowns to himself. the light catches against his glasses, obscuring his eyes, his expression unknowable.
in this world of academics, he must look strange. hunched with his orange bomber jacket, carefully cut and tailored. calm. collected. kim stands there like the surface of a lake, placid in his observations, the sharpness to his gaze hidden. “yes,” he says. “it is extraordinarily convenient to do, though. to die. to escape. something boring is usually agreeable for someone.”
the last two words hang there, a noose around the neck of the investigation. for someone.
here is the crux of things: at all points, someone gets what they want, and someone doesn’t. even here, on the grounds of a university, there is always someone carrying that weight.
❝ i may be somewhat used to seeing bad omens by now , but that … well , let’s just say it’s badder than most. ❞ ━━ @daringdarling
twin lakes ━━ a seemingly boring , ordinary town on the outside , but what lies deep within it’s dismal streets lurks something darker , the energy of other worldly forces at play easy to sense the moment the magician stepped foot into county lines. it’s not a surprise to him. in fact , he wouldn’t be here if the map hadn’t directed him this way , the town just another marker in his journey searching for places with trouble brewing , determined to quell it before it begins , or get worse in some unfortunate cases. meeting people who perhaps aren’t quite used to the world he has become strangely accustomed to is not at all uncommon , but it does bring a sense of small amusement to his face as they try to decipher what it is they saw , as if almost in a trance , still unsure what was reality & what may still be a dream. perhaps , even hopeful that that’s all it was.
unfortunately for this sorry sod of a detective , there is more at hand than what he bargained for , & it will take more than his clever hand at solving cases to seal this story up all nice & tight , & with a happy ending to boot. lucky for him , the goings on in this town have piqued the magician’s interest , curious if there is a tie to the rising darkness that’s been slowly spilling across the states ━━ perhaps they could help one another. ❝ hate to break it to you squire , but that’s more than just a bad omen you feel crawling on your back. ❞ a devilish grin is flashed at the detective , a silk cut cigarette balanced well at the corner of his lip , smoke surrounding his head like a mock halo. saint johnny , come to square up against the forces of evil to atone for his sins . . . it never ends. ❝ i’m here to stop trouble before it begins. something bad is coming , far worse than just your average bad omen , & i’ll need your knowledge of these streets & it’s history to keep this town & it’s civilians safe. but first . . . ❞ the magician removes the cigarette out of his mouth , blowing it up into the dark chill of the evening. ❝ be a good man & direct me to the nearest bed & breakfast. one shouldn’t go after demons on an empty stomach & i am famished. ❞
