Summary: Frankie has disappeared from home again, off on a job, and Ben is worried. Using the prompt "Stop. Don't do this, Frankie. You're better than that"
It’s almost midnight, but Benny doesn’t feel tired. No, he’s awake like a live wire sparking near a pool of water. Caged but ready to rip open flesh to unleash a beast hidden under his skin.
He’s most likely already ruined the beautiful carpet he and Frankie got as a housewarming gift from Will when they moved in together with his nervous pacing. He forces his legs to stop moving and glances down to his bare feet, grimacing at the squished fabric under his toes. Blue eyes flash with resignation and he shakes his head in disappointment.
Yeah, definitely ruined.
In his defense, Benny does have a good reason for his pacing and feeling wide awake. And that reason is Frankie.
He’s seen the signs in his lover for a good while now, but he just hadn’t wanted to open his eyes fully to see the impact before tonight. He’s seen the tightness of Frankie’s smile, the way he seemed cloaked in something heavy, shoulders hunched and how the hope for the future has been slowly dying in his dark brown eyes.
The darkness has gotten a hold over his pilot and Benny doesn’t like it one bit.
He’s felt it in their lovemaking; how Frankie has diligently made sure that Benny has all the pleasure that makes him forget the ugliness of the world they live in but rarely given himself that release. He’s felt it in their morning kisses, how kisses once full of longing are now full of sorrow, like that kiss might be the last they share ever.
Just thinking about it makes Benny shiver in fear and he flexes his fist. Not for the first time he wished the downstairs renovation would be finished and his home gym be ready. He could use a good session with the punching bag right about now. He’s so keyed up and worried he can barely stand still.
All because of a fucking job Frankie has taken on. A fucking job that has sunk it’s claws into his man and drawn shackles around his wrists.
The telltale sound of Frankie’s truck pulling up on the driveway makes Benny turn on his heels and rush out the front door. His long legs carry him from the porch to the truck easily and he wrestles the door open with force, ready to read him the riot act and pull Frankie out of whatever ledge he’s perched up upon. But when his eyes settle with the darkness and shadows, they grow wide with worry.
“Frankie… Shit.” Benny breathes out, an involuntary flinch running through the man still sitting in the front seat. All the words he wanted to speak out loud vanish from his mind when he takes in the condition of his lover sitting in the driver's seat. His tongue feels heavy, all the saliva dying in his mouth.
He knows Frankie swims with pretty big sharks and the darkness claims him a little more every night when he gets a text message into his burner phone. But to know what Frankie does as part of his twisted penance and to see it are two different things.
His pilot has been pretty good at hiding the physical aftermath of the job and it’s not like Benny is a stranger to blood and gore, but this… This feels next level.
Yes, all of them, Will and Santi included, are drenched in blood that will never wash away thanks to their chosen path and the orders from others. Yes, that blood and the shame of carrying it around on stained hands will never go away. But to see the red splattered all over his lover’s clothes and face is something Benny doesn’t ever want to see again.
It’s rust-colored and ominous, staining the cheeks and face of the man he loves. There are flecks of blood scattered all over his neck and patchy beard, disappearing under the collar of the well-worn burgundy T-shirt, like a tainted pathway. A macabre constellation Benny can’t look away from.
“It’s not mine,” Frankie mumbles, apology lacing his voice. The younger man shakes his head in disbelief. “Then who?” The words slip out before Benny can stop them. ”Whose blood is this? Who did you kill tonight?”
Frankie falls silent again, hands moving methodically as he unbuckles the seatbelt and steps out of the vehicle, his movements causing Benny to stumble backwards a bit. Even though the older man is shorter than the MMA fighter, his stance is that of an Alpha and he commands whatever space he enters with ease. Even this space they now share, standing toe to toe.
They stand there, locked in a battle of wills, the early autumn air surrounding them in a blanket that provides no comfort. In the distance, a dog barks once, twice before abruptly falling silent. A tree rustles in the background but neither man pays it any attention.
"Stop. Don't do this, Frankie. You're better than that,” Benny whispers, blue steel meeting unrelenting dark copper. He knows he sounds slightly pathetic but he’s determined to make the pilot understand the depth of his worry. “Please don’t do this anymore. I need you here with me, not out there. To emphasize his point, a long arm sweeps across the crisp air, capturing the vastness of ‘out there’.
Suddenly Frankie’s eyes narrow into tight slits, a predator sensing its prey. Before Ben can voice a protest, a strong arm wraps around his middle and he’s pulled tight into the pilot's chest. It’s warm, solid and safe. A large paw of a hand pushes his skull into familiar pectorals, shielding his vulnerable spots. In the next flash, Frankie’s other arm extends out, metal flashing near Benny’s cheek and the rhythmic pop, pop, pop rings in his ears.
The sound is so familiar as is the scent of gunpowder and -oil filling his nostrils and they flare with the knowledge. He doesn’t have to look behind him to know Frankie has killed the would-be assailant as a large thump echoes in the cold air.
His pilot never misses. It shouldn’t be as hot as it is, the knowledge of how deadly the man he’s in love with is.
Benny keeps his eyes locked with Frankie as he straightens himself, his tongue peeking out to wet his chapped lips. Frankie has always carried some sort of darkness with him, but the one dancing a deathly tango in his eyes is something else. It’s potent, hungry and powerful. It’s a mystery mixed with knowledge. It’s protection mixed with possession. It’s dark like the night but bright like a lightning and Benny feels the heat coiling inside him even in the coldness.
“Nobody will ever hurt you, mi vida. No one will ever touch you and if they try, I will burn down this world and watch you become a king rising from the ashes,” Frankie growls out in agritty tone, the words coming out fast, rough and demanding. The kiss that follows duplicates the heat of the words and Benny can’t help but to respond in kind.
It’s messy, full of teeth, both men gripping each other tighter as their tongues battle, trying to claim one another. The way Frankie kisses feels like he wants to crawl inside Benny and never let go. It’s a heady feeling and Benny moans, gripping the curls tight, the mixture of pain and pleasure only spurring the pilot further.
It takes a moment of this back and forth, give and take, but eventually Benny is the one that submits, gasping for air as Frankie’s teeth find his neck, licking and sucking every inch of available skin.
The trees rustle again and a sense of foreboding fills Benny, replacing the arousal, and he forces his eyes open. Frankie seems unaware, trailing a blazing fire down his throat but stops immediately when Benny pulls back fast.
Pop, pop, pop!
The triple sound once more echoes in the air and something heavy drops to the concrete, next to the other body already there. Benny drops his hand, the weight of Frankie’s gun pulling it under. The shorter man rises to his full height, sorrow in his eyes when he looks at his partner.
“Benny…” Roles reversed, Frankie whispers brokenly but Benny just surges forward to press their lips together into a hard kiss, pouring everything he feels into it. The gun drops, the metal hitting the ground unheard by both men as they once more find themselves lost in a world of their own. Fear for each other’s lives mixes with arousal and hands grip available fabric and skin to bring the other even closer.
“If you burn the world down, I will freeze every poor soul that even thinks of getting close enough to hurt you. I swear that to you now, Francisco Morales.” The naked hunger in his voice is matched by the dark infinity pools that gaze back at Benny.
“I swear that to you now, Benjamin Miller. As my heart is true, so are my words. Now and forever,” Frankie vows back, the blood drying in his skin proof of that. Benny nods, the gravity of what they just did settling into their minds as he grasps at the collar of his T-shirt to pull him in for another kiss.
The gun barrel smokes on the ground, momentarily discarded but not forgotten. There will be a time when that gun will be used to kill again, but for now the two men lose themselves in the shared love, secure in the knowledge no threat will come their way.
