Tender is the Flesh

Just finished this book and my brain is still buzzing, trying to put my thoughts in order.

First and foremost, all of the trigger warnings for this. Cannibalism, dismemberment, sexual assault, rape, gore, violence, animal death, child death, violence against children/minors, human trafficking, pregnancy, depictions of dementia, religious sacrifice.

I feel like this is a good book, but it contains a lot of heavy content. I you're not sure, please do some research before picking this book up!

In this book, a virus allegedly infects all non-human animals, which makes ingesting them or their byproducts infect humans. As such, the meat industry eventually turns to breeding humans for consumption. These bred humans even have their vocal cords cut out, so they cannot speak.

The story follows the main character, Marcos, as he deals with his father slowly succumbing to dementia and his fractured relationship with his wife after they lose their son. He also works for a processing plant that distributes "special meat," ie human meat.

They use "domesticated" humans for everything imaginable: food, leather, milk, hunting for sport. It's to the point that well-off households can keep domesticated humans in their kitchen and butcher them alive, piece by piece.

There's also "meat with a first and last name," which is non-domesticated humans. These are humans that are paying off a debt, sacrificing themself due to religious zeal, or are trafficked.

While there is definitely a vegetarian/vegan undercurrent, I feel like there's a bigger message with how capitalism exploits people. This is the ultimate exploitation of a human; to be physically cut to pieces, eaten, experimented on, used in every way imaginable.

Only be seen by the value you present others - often in higher standing than yourself - in one form or another.
