I haven’t played Dark Cloud in years. I was 9 when it came out and I was never able to finish it the first time around. Wasn’t an avid gamer as a kid, didn’t have a lot of time to play and it was the family tv and system so I had to share. Now nineteen years later I’m sitting down to it again because I forgot I still had it and a working PS2. This game is so great, even with the older graphics it’s still really fun and creative.
I didn’t realize Dark Cloud had a small fandom on tumblr, so here’s this Xiao I drew back in april
(my instagram is Supaxiao if you would like to see more of my art, I don’t really post it anywhere else)
made an old pic aesthetic lol
Dark Cloud Review
This is a review of Dark Cloud, this is the first game I ever bought when I got my PlayStation 2, and it is a fantastic game, it's an action rpg that is slightly similar to Legend of Zelda, only, in my opinion, way better than Legend of Zelda, but like I said, that's my own opinion, if you have a different opinion, that's fine, we all like different games, I'm not going to change my mind that I think this game is better than Legend of Zelda, so no point in talking about it.
Story
The story for this game is really good and solid, I first got this game back in 2002 when I bought my PlayStation 2, and when I first started it up and started a new game, I thought the story was really amazing, a Dark Genie trying to destroy the world, and you have to rebuild the world and stop him, was and still is an amazing story.
Graphics
The graphics are really good, even still today, I love the graphics of this game, I could play this game for hours on hours and never get tired of the graphics, sure they're not as good as they used to be, but then again, what game is, I prefer these graphics over any of the Legend of Zelda games.
Music
The music in Dark Cloud is excellent, each village and dungeon has it's own unique soundtrack, which is different than most rpg's today, most of the themes are lively, but some are a bit unsettling, like the opening scene's music, some dungeon music can also be a little unsettling as well, but for the most part, it's pretty lively.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Dark Cloud is rather unique, it's an action rpg, and it is in my opinion the best action rpg ever made, you can equip different weapons and equip them with gems that increase different stats, like give them fire qualities, increase damage to specific monster types and upgrade your weapons with upgrade powder, you can also after a certain amount of upgrade, break a weapon down with 50 % of it's stats, so, you could potentially build your characters the ultimate weapons just through upgrading and breaking down, another thing that makes the game unique is building villages, each village has to be rebuilt from the ground up, roads, trees, lakes, houses and that is the main thing that makes this the best action rpg, you can choose where each seperate piece goes, and you find these pieces when you explore dungeons, in order to get them, you need your main character to open these little orbs in the Dungeons, cause only he can open them, and each of them contain a piece of the village, eventually, you'll have all the pieces and be able to rebuild the entire village, each building has several pieces that you have to complete, and once you do, you get something from the people living in the building, and the other unique thing about this game is the day and night cycle, the other interesting mechanic in this game is you need to drink water, which you can buy from item shops, think one of the most interesting mechanics is with the characters though, in order to get through some areas, you have to switch to a different character in order to pass over a hurdle, or get through a door depending on what you need to get passed, and there are some dungeons that only certain characters can go through, and will automatically switch to, and another danger of Dungeons is conditions in some areas, like you could expend water faster, weapons could wear down faster and need to be repaired with repair powder more often, etc.
The dungeons are well done, and the monsters that inhabit them are also very well done, love the monster designs, lot of time went into creating them, there are many different types depending on the dungeon.
You have 6 characters you can encounter in various areas, and they join your party, but instead of a normal rpg, in order to get passed areas, you will need to use every character occasionally, lot of them are good at certain things the others are not good at, if you try to use only one character, you most likely will have a hard time with this game, so don't try to do this game with only one character, use all of them when you get them, it'll make the game much easier.
This has been my review of Dark Cloud, this game for me gets a 10 out of 10 in my books.
How to beat the second boss in Dark Cloud
Hey guys are so some of you were plain dark cloud just like me for the ps2 so I wanted to say who's ever fighting the big monkey guy you need three sets of 9 pairs of bombs and then you need 3 more bombs that's exactly how much you need thanks bye
Question for anyone who’s also played Dark Cloud on PS2? *solved maybe?*
*Solution possibly found?* After beating the boss, I was able to sell things to Gaffer again. Leaving this here so hopefully if someone else has this issue in the future they can find an answer: I guess the game is just telling you “Just fight the boss already.” Which is stupid. Let me grind, damn you!
I restarted Dark Cloud the other day and have been trying to level up weapons before fighting the first boss. But now whenever I try to sell anything to Odd Gaffer the old man just says “I cannot take any more items.”
Why the hell is this happening? Does this game have a limit to how much you can sell to shopkeepers?
I tried looking this up online and literally could not find anything about it with google. All I got was the broken dagger glitch.
Please please please please answer! I really need help and this is super frustrating!
