In the dark dungeons of the mind; Strange creatures walk and breed their kind; The Mantis mounts the stair, With movements free as air

The Praying-Mantis mounts the stair, Her tiny arms upheld in prayer. In chasuble and stole, She stands to read my soul

I know not what dark thing is there, Nor why my soul must feel despair, Nor why she turns away And bids the Mantis slay.

In the deep dungeons of the mind, Strange creatures walk and breed their kind; With arms upheld in prayer The Mantis mounts the stair.
