They said that being hated by the one you loved hurted most, but what no one ever talked about was the pain - that little feeble ache in your chest when you were treated like you didn't exist.
That was what you had begun to live with.
Invisible in ways that you existed in documents, a name hidden behind files and doddles, whispered in the forgotten halls of time. But no one bothered to remember what you like, what made you smile. Who you were.
And with time, even with the feeling buried deep in your chest , you learned to not care too hard. So what if your pillow soaked wet with your tears every night? So what if your eyes had that reflection begging for love? It was your privacy to deal with it.
You were now nineteen, still a child yet given no mercy that was normally bestowed on one. Your family used to be kind, used to cherish your every smile, every laugh like it was sun soaking up their tiredness.
But now - your gaze dragged towards the door, blinking back at it with a haze of indifference, you felt nothing. You got up from your bed and made your way out.
They were there yet not present at the same point.
The house was empty with your parents out for work and siblings having left for college. You were the only one home.
Again.
You let out a breath when the window's reflection met yours in a tint, causing the hollowness you felt to appear more visible and loud. The background behind you appeared calm, a feeling that no one even lived here was apparent, like you were the only ghost to roam the corridors of this house.
A notification pop up on your phone.
You took your phone out of your pocket and swiped up the screen, typing the password. Your eyes scanned over the text with great precision, deciphering everything that was written.
I'm a bit busy right now , so I won't be in the office. Though if it works with you, shall we meet at the cafe to discuss work over lunch in late afternoon ? - T. D
Your eyes flickered to the clock on the wall. The needle struck at clock chime, a loud ring sound was made. You turned your attention towards the screen, the phone hanging in your left hand, text waiting for an answer.
So your professor had a busy schedule for the next few hours, how unusual. You were free for the next few hours from your duty as his TA. Your hazy eyes shadow stirred over the screen's light, you were going to be alone even longer.
Your pupils constricted.
Your fingers began to type a response, stopping, deleting and retyping several times before you decided a simple reply would suffice.
Sure, which cafe though? - You
You didn't think he'd respond for a while but life always loved to throw curve balls at you. Your professor replied.
Midnight cafe, street 67 , near the playground at 4pm - T. D
He replied robotically almost as if he was waiting for your response. You sent thumbs up and turned off your phone.
That worked out in your favour.
The cafe was near your house, so you wouldn't have to walk much and you could go to the playground afterwards for the swings to chill.
Your head hit the counter in recoil, letting the cold tile caress the softness of your skin and cool the heat of your body.
You needed to conserve some energy before you got started with doing the work assigned to you. “ - Yawn - I still got five hours left…” you closed your eyes and let the darkness welcome you.
It never crossed your mind, how bizarre it was. How the you from three years ago would shake her head if she saw you ignore such obvious signs.
Back then, you still had some backbone behind you. Maybe it was the adrenaline pumping through your blood or the teenage skepticism that made you question each and everything.
Craving affection didn't mean you let people get close to your heart that easily.
Those thick cement walls were to protect you after being treated like a stranger in your own home and you would've been damned if someone entered through the only door so easily.
But your professor Tim Drake entered through the door as if those walls weren't even there. Breaking through your skepticism and earning your trust but by bit.
His pale blue eyes scared you sometimes, with how shallow they looked. Your body sending signals like they were free tickets to expressway but as if your brain had decided to mark them as unimportant, you remained ignorantly unaware to the way he would treat you differently.
To you he'd always been professional and kind since the day he asked you to consider being his TA and even when you were just a student in his class, despite everything being the exact opposite.
But maybe for a child that begged to be seen, being acknowledged by someone that had everyone's admiration made you blind in your logic.
He was your professor, you owed him a little trust at least.
This was the exact thinking that made the innocent such easy prey to the the monsters.
Predators always used the prey's weakness well and Tim Drake would be a fool if he didn't exploit something that was so obviously there.
On the other side of Gotham, inside one of the room of dim lights and expensive furniture, several screens marked every corner of one for the walls.
Pale blue eyes gazed at them with fascination, looking so sharply, with such focus that it felt as if the world would end if even a second was missed from his eyes.
“How long are you planning to cowardly watching the girl from afar, Drake?” , the voice came from behind. Blue eyes shifted from the screen for a second before turning back to admire the figure on screen.
The tan green eyed man scoffed before moving closer to his brother that sat on his table solving files while watching the woman he'd been stalking since her birth.
Damian was tired if watching his brother wait for the perfect time. His brither was lucky enough to find his destined one, so why was he still so hesitant to make her part of the family?
He crashed the cup of coffee on his brother's table, causing a few paper to fly away. “ Your muddy poison, Drake. Enjoy poisoning yourself to death with it.” Damian said.
His brother looked at him, like actually looked at him and nodded. “ Thanks Dami…”
Damian signed, feeling a headache coming. Jason had better convince his father to let him keep the new humans he'd turned a fees days prior by mistake, or else Damian was going to promise him a painful revenge.
He turned towards the door, ready to get out and ask Terey or Duke for a friendly spar, when his brother called from behind him. “ I'm planning on turning her today.”
Damian's steps halted.
He looked at his brother and knew that he was serious.
“ You've finally decided…” Damian's Voice mumbled.
“ Yeah.”
Damian paused, “ I thought you were going to prolong it till she was twenty five, Drake? Wasn't that your original plan for the girl?”
His brother got up and stood in front of him and Damian saw the reflection of the same desperation he had seen, when his father had made Drake a part of their family centuries ago.
300 hundred years, that's how long it had been.
“ I had planned too.. I really did but-” His brother's eyes turned emerald green like his, fangs peeking out. “ She's lonely…so damn lonely ! and I'd be damned if I let the woman the universe had Enterwinted my would with suffer what I went through!”
Damian's face tilted in a cruel smile, his normal green eyes glowing amused at the words. He spoke the words that he knew his brother would appreciate. “ How can I help , Timothy?”
He couldn't be more proud as a brother.
Cassandra was exhausted , so very tired and exhausted. She currently stood, pressing her body weight over the wall listening to her eldest brother gushing over how happy he was that Tim was finally making a move.
Yeah Tim, her baby brother who had finally decided to take their advice and convert you. The same sibling of hers that was responsible for her standing here and listening to Dick.
She hissed under breath. If she didn't get some fresh blood to drink soon, she was going to riot. The way Jason was standing next to her giving Dick a look, daring him to try and hug him, showed he felt what she did.
Anoyance.
But they both were still here.
No, all her siblings were here.
This was a very important moment for the family and her brother and Cassandra knew for all of Jason's hatred and rage, he wouldn't miss his brother getting the love of his life for anything.
Cassandra and Jason made eye contact, “ Is the preparationlcomplete?” She asked.
Jason dipped, “ Wouldn't put it past Alfie if everything wasn't already cleaned and prepared to perfection.” his arms folded around his abdomen.
Cassandra agreed. Alfred would make sure everything was in the best condition. She knew better to question the Butler's ability. He'd been alive longer than a Millenium afterall.
Besides, Cassandra had done her research and was absurdly certain that you wouldn't even realise what was going on before it was too late. You were someone that craved love and if Tim could guarantee it to you, then you'd comply sooner or later.
And if you didn't than Cassandra had centuries of experiences to help you learn to comply. She was a patient teacher in spite it all.
She turned her attention back to her eldest brother. He had gone silent in the few moment she had let her mind wander.
Duke and Stephanie had also gone and returned. Stephanie whistled carrying the iron with the family's logo. She smiled waving at Cassandra.
She heard Dick clap his hand and all her sibling's attention turned to him. They all knew the look in their brother's eyes and the daunting iron in Stephanie’s hand served as a remained for what was to come.
For you to be part of the family, this was the only way.
Cassandra could recite the way it would proceeded clearly in her mind.
First, you'd arrive at the given location, dressed in clothes you would have deemed business casual or for work. Tim would greet you like he always did and guide you to your seat.
You'd order a drink, too exhausted from the task Tim had given you previously to tire you, to think why the whole place look unoccupied.
The waitress would bring your drink and you'd take a sip not expecting anything and begin to lose your consciousness, till you'd be out of it.
Tim would stand and pick you, nodding at Damian, Cassandra’s youngest brother would wipe the memory of all the Staff and they'd leave to return here.
In the Mansion, your doom would begin. First with being undressed by Barbara, her and Stephanie , then kissed and bitten at every inch of your skin.
Then being passed among all her siblings till you end up in the arms of Tim again.
Then He would take the heated iron rod from Terry's hand and with help of Jason and Dick, he'd mark you with the family's symbol without a hint if hesitation.
And Cassandra would look at her baby brother proud and happily.
Cassandra couldn't wait. She picked up the glass from the table and raised her glass with her siblings. “ May our brother prosper in his 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲. ” Dick grinned, all of their glasses collided in a clink.
A Wayne's always got their way.
