The Bioengineer: Returned
It took longer for the Director to complete the preparations than usual. The downsizing not only drew the skeptical attention of her equals, but sapped her resource pool. Kat made her way through the tunnels she had come to memorize until she came to the secluded room where she spent the last few days when claiming to be at the office, her gaze instantly meeting the gnomish corpse that lay on the center table.
A set of casual and dark leathers adorned the Director’s body in place of the usual uniform or business clothes, slender digits procured a match book from a side pocket, careful steps guided her about the room as she lit the various candles and incense. Once everything was lit and in place Kat made her way to the small table that sat at the head of the dead gnome. To her left was a glass orb, perched small metal legs, crimson life fluid rested within. To her right was a bowl, filled with previously crushed herbs and oils. With a final glance at the corpse, the Director’s hands reached up behind her neck to unclasp the large purple stone that had been hanging around her neck for the last three months, setting it gently in the center of the table before her.
The spirit housed within the stone stirred for a moment, aware of the what was to come at it’s own request. A slight shine in the crystal’s core and subtle movement to assure the Director that the soul was still present and prepared to return. The last few weeks had been strangely quite, the devious gnome no doubt plotting from within his prison.
A low hum drummed up from Kat’s core, the subtle movement of the crystal coming as no surprise. Her left hand dipped into the crushed herbs as she rounded the table, the fingertips laced in shadow and left eye glazing over in a void-like hue as the Director moved around the table to stand over the gnomish body. Slow and precise movements guided the slender digits as it traced out intricate runes with the shadowed herbs across the body’s forehead, arms and legs. Once the tracings were complete, Kat rounded the table again and dragged the darkened hand over the blood orb, causing the contents to stir violently before treads of crimson emerged from the glass.
Blood threads danced and writhed in the air as the Director weaved with her right hand, guiding the forbidden forces to the gem that rested on the table. After a short moment and quietly muttered words, a faint wisp like essence was yanked from the violet prism by the tendrils of blood. With a few more words hushed under her breath, the runes and tracings on the corpse began to glow and the crimson threads writhed towards the body with the soul ensnared in their clutch.
The candles in the room flicked for a moment as crimson tendrils wrapped around the body, sinking the soul essence into the shell to fill it once more. A few quick words passed the Director’s lips once more as her hands dropped slowly in the air, fully submerging the soul into the body. The blood in the air dance around the body for a moment as a faint grin began to slowly grow on the gnome’s lips. Crimson life coiled around the body before sinking completely in, vanishing from sight as Kat’s hands rested on the table before her, the gem in the center now dark and empty, the glass orb to her side hollow and clear.
A slow breath filled the Director’s lungs as her amber gaze watched the body carefully before further signs of life were seen. Her duty as a soul keeper over and the request of the old ally fulfilled.
