From So You Want To Be A Wizard: A “vampire cab” of the Dark Manhattan.
Mark Oshiro raised a valid question that I am not sure you've answered: "Did Diane Duane create Dark Manhattan after visiting Newark?"
Oh, no, not at all.
Bear in mind that I lived through the great NY blackout of 1965. The images of Manhattan in the midst of that will have sunk deeply into the memories of many northeast-based people of that generation, including me. In images like these…
…The only thing that saved that scenario from complete creepiness was that the moon that night was full. (And who knows… that might have sunk into my memory as well.)
But as for Newark: When Continental was still an airline in its own right, we used to fly in and out of EWR via CO on a regular basis. But that would have been many years after the above images were already stamped on my brain. Nowadays, of course, Continental is no more, except as part of United, and to judge by the reviews on most of the consumer sites the airline appears to be being run by the Lone Power; so as a rule, now, when flying into the US we no longer go that way.
(Though there was a good diner-y restaurant there where we would wile / while away the hours between connecting flights. Gone now, apparently. Bloody entropy…)

☮ For Our World ☮
We need to stop. Just stop. Stop for a moment. Before anybody Says or does anything That may hurt anyone else. We need to be silent. Just silent. Silent for a moment. Before we forever lose The blessing of songs That grow in our hearts. We need to notice. Just notice. Notice for a moment. Before the future slips away Into ashes and dust of humility. Stop, be silent, and notice. In so many ways, we are the same. Our differences are unique treasures. We have, we are, a mosaic of gifts To nurture, to offer, to accept. We need to be. Just be. Be for a moment. Kind and gentle, innocent and trusting, Like children and lambs, Never judging or vengeful Like the judging and vengeful. And now, let us pray, Differently, yet together, Before there is no earth, no life, No chance for peace.
