Honestly the Fine Bros thing is arguable worse because they're actually trying to control any kind of content that involves people reacting to stuff and apparently tried to call out Ellen for doing a "React" thing without them a couple years ago. With Sony, they just tried and failed to trademark "Let's Play" and even then we don't know what they would've done with it or if they would've done anything to LPers
I’d have to see the Ellen video I think but like their update video honestly doesn’t sound that terrible
they’re basically saying what I thought they meant, like they’re opening up very specifically their format (like the name cards, animation, fact cards, etc etc) to let users make videos under their name using their graphic resources (terminology? idk) and to reach a larger audience
they specifically say “we were never trying to say that every video where someone reacts to something else is something we are trying to control”
it doesn’t really sound like backpedalling to me when that was the impression I got from their original video, although I don’t really have a grasp on trademarking law
