Rachel felt a bit stupid standing there with Nathan. He had caught her at just the wrong time -- drunk, coming down from her high. Her emotions were running on high as the nightly anxiety attack was starting to settle in. Standing in the furthest corner away from the swaying bodies of fellow Vortex club members and the wannabes that pretended to be drunk off watered down beer, Rachel felt like the walls were going to cave in around her. She was going to suffocate.

“Nathan, fuck --” She breathed, knitting her brows together. “Listen, can you help me outside?”

The unfortunate thing about Blackwell is that it’s a very small school, and even when there’s someone you’re trying exceptionally hard to avoid, you’re going to run into them eventually. Sometimes literally. 

Max generally tries to stay out of Nathan’s way. She’s had just one too many encounters with him to ever want to be near him again. Especially today- Jefferson’s on her about the contest again, her mom is annoyed with her for something or other, and she’d found a lovely message courtesy of Victoria on her whiteboard this morning. So she’s just really, really not in the mood for anyone’s bullshit today. 

As soon as she’s dismissed from her last class of the day, she’s off, earbuds in her ears and camera in hand. She’s rarely without it these days- Mr. Jefferson encouraged his students to always take the shot, to always be prepared, so she tries to be. But that, combined with the fact that she’s rarely without her iPod, made her gain a reputation as a bit of a recluse. Which isn’t too far off, if she’s being totally honest.

On her way into the dorms, she pauses to take a photo, of one of the last flowers still in the courtyard. Most of the others had died out by now, since it was October already. And this lone blossom sticks out to her. She crouches, readying her camera. Looking through the viewfinder, she realizes it isn’t quite the way she wants it. She takes a half-step back to reframe it, scowling slightly, only to stumble and fall- right into someone’s legs. Oh, Jesus. 

“I’m sorry!” she gasps as she scrambles to her feet, taking in what sort of footwear the person she’d just collided with was wearing, but not much else. Her polite expression falters when she realizes who it is. “Sorry,” she repeats, with somewhat less conviction. “I was trying to frame a shot,” she adds meekly. She knows Nathan’s a photographer, too. Appealing to that will maybe make him less mad. Maybe.
