He knew he was gonna get kept back after school that day, he really didn't want anyone to wait up for him though, but he always felt kind of lonely walking home from school. Rise was in his class but honestly he didn't want to ask her to stay back for him, he knew she'd had priorities. For some reason he'd have felt embarrassed to have asked one of the older guys to stay behind, so his only choice left was Naoto, he texted her asking her if she could wait up for him after school, and then his phone ran out of battery.

Kanji had a feeling that Naoto probably wouldn't wait up for him, so he did his time staying back, and left the classroom when it was over. Well, she wasn't waiting in front of the classroom if she had been waiting up. Maybe she was outside? Yeah. Maybe she was. The Emperor tries to reassure himself that he won't be walking home alone today.
