If an athlete from Brazil or any other developing country would get drunk, trash a gas station, bully security guards, and lie to the police, most people, consciously or not, would have blamed it on the Latin culture, faulty national educational systems, and societal values. Now, if a famous white swimmer does it, we just blame it on a single individual -- means nothing about white Americans in general. Just a few boys misbehaving. Privilege is also the privilege of having the bad acts of a random individual in your community be considered as just that -- and not mean that all the people in your community are bad, have faulty values, are intrinsically violent, have loose morals... Something that African-Americans, Brazilians, Muslims, Jews, Latinos, and others can't enjoy. Just in case you were wondering what Ryan Lochte's case has to do with race and bias.
