Poster 57, 2022. The amazing folks at @sequoiaparksconservancy were nice enough to ask me if I’d like to create the art for their upcoming Dark Sky Festival. It takes place annually amongst the massive Sequioa trees within the Kings Canyon and Sequioa National Parks. With both being amongst my favorite National Parks, it was beyond exciting for me to work on this one! The main challenge was defining all of the flora and fauna to read amongst a very dark night with only the Milky Way to light the way. To achieve this I limited the colors to one warm and one cool tone and relied on rim lighting to define all of the different shapes. I also wanted to capture the depth and height you get at those parks by adding layers of dimension. There’s a foreground, multiple ‘mid-grounds’, and then a background that includes the giant Sequoias and the night sky. As you can see from the sketch, I went the complete opposite direction of what I usually do (sketching on a white ground) and started on a dark ground knowing the end result would have to work on black. It felt like I was working on a trippy black light poster! It’s a true honor to get to work with the National Parks teams. You can’t help but respect all they do to keep these miracles on earth preserved and protected.
