My dilemma (I think it’s one not too uncommon this year) is what to do at the top of this thing, which one of the 328 candidates for president on my ballot should get my vote? I’ve got all the rest of both pages, front and back, of this thing all filled out and ready to go. But the one race is still a conundrum. (Colorado mails out all ballots and then we must mail them back or take them to drop-off locations).
As a classical liberal, original constitutionalist, conservative type of individual this election was lost shortly after the closing of the polls for the Indiana Republican primary. I know that someone I do not like and can not stomach enough to even reluctantly vote for will become the next president of the once great United States of America. There is nothing at all I can do at this point do stop that.
That still leaves the question however of what I should do. I have some things I know that I can not do and could not face myself knowing I had done, and in this case that is voting for either the dem or gop candidates. I know I will vote for someone who will lose the election, however this is not a huge change for me personally and I believe it is a horrible reason not to vote for someone.
As I have said many times recently, this vote is mine. It is not Trump’s and it is not Hillary’s and I am not in any way helping either of them to get elected, no matter what anyone says. I am not helping them simply because I am not voting for them, they are both far too horrible as individuals and on policy, in my view, to get my vote.
So, the question remains, what should I do? Who should I vote FOR?
I’ve liked Gary in the past, I was less informed at the time but when I was in New Mexico and he was the governor he did seem to do a good job. But lately he has made some policy choices I disagree with, as well as demonstrating an amazing ability to be unpolished and a poor campaigner at a cringe-worthy level, which certainly turns me off.
However, as the libertarian candidate he represents the most likely third place finisher and stupid campaign laws are set up such that a strong 3rd place finish this year, which is more likely than in elections with at least one good candidate from the two major parties, could make a substantial change in favor of alternate party access in the future and perhaps lead to the major parties feeling like they should at least consider maybe nominating someone electable for a change.
And, while I do not like Gary all that much I do feel he is good enough that I would be only slightly disappointed with myself for voting for him, which is sadly far above average for this election. And I am hopeful his party goes a bit younger next time and runs Austen Petersen who I like considerably better than Johnson.
McMullin and Castle are both similar to me (I clicked that box on isidewith before it told me what it was and now can’t figure out how to clear it). They both will not possibly win my state or even be third in all likelihood but when I have heard them speak I like what they say consistently a great deal more than others in the race. I could feel good with myself voting for either of them and I give the nod to Evan between the two of them largely as he has seemed more knowledgeable on foreign matters. However, running as an independent means that even if some miracle occurs and he was to win a state or have a strong national showing there would be much less lasting change to the system than if the same were to happen with Gary Johnson. Even comparing the Libertarian and Constitution parties this largely holds true as the party apparatus of the Libertarians at this point is considerably stronger than Castle’s party. I know there will be a Libertarian candidate in 2020, but I can not say the same for the Constitution party.
I know I want to vote in favor of someone, not against someone. And that alone eliminates Trump and Clinton. I would feel alright voting for any of Gary, Darrell, or Evan. Yet I also want to do whatever little bit I can to avoid a repeat of this horrible situation in the future and demonstrate that both major political parties of this country have failed miserably and feel that message would be best conveyed through a Libertarian vote.
As I have written all this out, I obviously can see a few different sides of things and while I do believe there are legitimate points in a few different directions I believe I know what is most important to me.
I want to vote for someone, for the person currently running who I believe would be the best at the job, for the person with the ideas and policy proposals I most agree with and think would improve the country the most. I believe strongly that if we all just ignored how polls and media tell us we should vote and if we all strove to always vote for the best person instead of simply against the worst person we could see some considerably different results and we would hopefully not be stuck in a situation where over a third of the people pulling the lever for a major candidate are not doing so because they are in favor of that individual but because they don’t want the other person. Maybe we would not see stupid horrible debates that pretend we only have two choices and refuse to even let us hear the views and opinions of anyone else so we can’t possibly decide for ourselves.
So long as the ballot is set up asking for a vote for one that I believe should hold the office instead of one to eliminate from contention (maybe I’m actually on to something here though...) I believe it is best to do just that and actually follow the simple instructions. So, I will fill out that little bubble for Evan McMullin and I know that he will not win or make a major change in the world I feel alright with that and better knowing that I personally did what I feel is right and I did all the little bit that I can to put a stop to whatever flavor of disaster we will have as a result of this election.
tl;dr I choose to vote for instead of against and just maybe if we all did that all the time things would be a whole lot better
