Darth Vex: Library Wars
Author’s Notes: @lectorel @darthrevaan So, several years down the line, and inspiration suddenly strikes once again. A new snippet in the Sith Librarian Obi-Wan ‘verse. A brief quote from/reference to Eric Nylund’s Mortal Coils novel is included.
The issue, at its core, is precipitated on the fact that the Jedi have fundamentally misunderstood the exact goal behind the numerous lawsuits that his lawyers have brought against the Order. Granted, the sheer, petty amusement it brings Vex is behind a not-inconsiderable amount of said efforts, but the point remains.
The Jedi think he is doing this to be a nuisance? Let them think so. It’s even, to a certain extent, accurate.
(As Darth Liah once said, a moment in time pinned down on an aging data-slate carefully excavated from a moon choked in dreaming flowers: I will only lie to you with the truth.)
Of course, he does have the excuse that this is about the Sith artifacts that the Jedi have so carefully collected, contained, and curated over the millennia. He’s dragged them through the courts, loudly protesting his legal right to the reclamation of his ‘ancestral property’ - his lawyers have made some truly splendid arguments. Obi-Wan is particularly fond of the justification that he, as a Sith Lord recognized and acknowledged as such by the Jedi, who has committed no crimes against the Republic, has best legal claim to the relics of his forebears.
This is also true. Somewhat.
What he carefully does not say - and what the Jedi Council fails to realize - can, perhaps, be encapsulated in one simple question.
Why should he bother?
Sorzus Syn’s notes on Sith Alchemy, lanvaroks and shikkars from Korriban, holocrons of Sith Lords of Old dating back to the First Schism - Obi-Wan can’t say he’s not tempted. Then again, he can’t help but wonder just how the Jedi came to the conclusion that said artifacts were the only ones of their kind. Or that copies hadn’t been made at some point. It’s probably an offshoot of the same mindset that led Jocasta Nu to proclaim that the Jedi Archives were the sole and complete repository of all the information in the Galaxy. And they claim that Sith are arrogant?
...the fact that a large amount of the artifacts within the Jedi’s so-called ‘Black Vault’ are fakes - with the true ones resting in Sidious’s hands - is also something to keep in mind. Vex certainly isn’t going to be the one to inform them of said fact - not out of some non-existent ‘loyalty’ to the Sith, but from the much more straightforward demands of self-preservation.
But.
But, if his visit to the Black Vault - the one his lawyers have argued for, the one where the Jedi ultimately offered to release a ‘select number of artifacts’ into his keeping (primarily as a gesture to make him shut up, he assumes), the one wherein the Jedi are watching every move he makes and, perhaps more importantly, what he does and does not select -
Well. If said visit happens to result in intense scrutiny of what he does not choose - and their veracity, or lack thereof - it’s surely none of his business.
A touch of the Dark, and the holocrons before him glow dimly red, the consciousnesses of long-dead Sith Lords blossoming before his eyes and force-sense.
Carefully, he bows.
(And here is also something the Jedi have never understood.)
“I am Darth Vex, of the Black Library.”
(The Dark has never been tame.)
“Would any of you care to come with me?”
He smiles.

“I go now to confront my worst enemy.” Darth Vex said, face taunt with unreleased tension. His hand curled loosely across his lightsaber in a gesture of self-comfort; Anakin stared, spoon practically dropping from his fist even as Shmi rested her forehead in her palm with a light groan.
“Really, Obi-Wan, must you?” The Butcher of Geonosis complained, an unexpectedly plaintive note in her voice. Anakin’s disbelieving gaze flickered between her mother and the curator of the Black Library; Vex ignored him, answering his line-aunt with a single stiff nod.
“Yes.” The Sith growled, fists clenching.
***
Shmi had pulled him aside after Darth Vex departed in an overly dramatic swirl of black robes, quietly suggesting that he might want to find some excuse - any excuse - to avoid the Jedi Temple for a few days. Just in case. Anakin had, accordingly, taken the first mission available and happily spend the following cycles enmeshed in Courscant’s black market district, tracing an antique ‘cultural artifact’ that a senator had reported as ‘missing’ earlier that week.
He might also have taken the opportunity to catch up on the status of the current illegal swoop-bike races. Just in case. One never knew what knowledge might come in handy later on.
As such, he was one of the lucky ones not to be present when Darth Vex, current curator of the Black Library and Archives, met face-to-face with Jedi Master, Joscasta Nu, current caretaker of the Jedi Archives.
Witnesses stated that they were extremely polite to one another.
@darthrevaan
By my count, the Dark Council in the Empire’s Ransom verse was still empty in a few seats, and for a while I was content to say that Zakuul had essentially strongarmed Acina into keeping them empty (given that they were Defence and Military spheres) while Acina was perfectly content to keep seats empty so that she’d have less opposition within her own faction, I decided I wasn’t keen on that idea anymore and that I wanted a far more functional Council than... whatever that was in game. Acina is the sole survivor but we see Vowrawn in the dream chapter? Vowrawn takes the throne if she dies but Mortis and Ravage turn up on Nathema after having been absent for up to eight years because... reasons? All those secondary thrones in Acina’s throne room on Dromund Kaas but... no Council?
Ahem. Anyway.
Lord Rakur Zrota, also known as Darth Vex, Master of the Sphere of Military Offense. A veteran of the Great Galactic War, Rakur was an apprentice of Darth Azamin prior to his assassination in 3653BBY, he kept a low profile during the initial years of the Cold War so as to avoid the same fate as his master but worked to build connections and alliances that would ensure his enemies would struggle to counter his rise to power. He/they, genderqueer, Rakur describes himself as “if you’re attracted to me, that makes you gay”. He ascended to the Dark Council after the death of Darth Arkous, Darth Atroxa was his apprentice and later ally, and rumours persisted about the two of them having been lovers prior to her death at the hands of Prince Arcann.
Lord Arthynn Tui, also known as Darth Iniuria, Master of the Sphere of Defense of the Empire. She was an apprentice of Darth Ekkage and second in command of the Red Legion, Ekkage’s legendary squad of assassins; the capture of her master and the presumed loss of the rest of the Legion was a source of immense shame for her, and she fell out of favour amongst the upper echelons of the Sith. She spent the years of the Cold War working alongside Darth Baras, her master’s brother, but turned against him when he claimed the title of Voice of the Emperor, supporting instead the new Emperor’s Wrath Tahrin Dara. She reestablished the Red Legion, and after the death of Darth Marr against Zakuul, led a very public campaign to be appointed to the Dark Council. She/her, cis female, Arthynn is a notoriously private individual, and next to nothing is known of her personal life. .
How does the Jedi Order and possibly Palpatine react to the news that Anakin's mother is a sith Lady?
Mass panic.
Okay, but have you considered Anakin's reaction to the Sith style wargear *waggles eyebrows*

Anakin would, in all likelihood, be uncomfortably turned on.
Not only does Obi-Wan look - deadly, all sharp edges and gleaming eyes, made for war and violence, the Dark surging through him and shining from his eyes, but - well. Sith Wedding robes are deliberately patterned on Sith War-Armor. Obi-Wan in Sith Wargear would remind him very much of their wedding.
Obi-Wan, in turn, would find himself swallowing very hard if Anakin somehow ended up in Sith Wargear. He might even end up asking Anakin if he’d be interested in wearing it - someplace off the battlefield.
They can play Helpless Jedi and Menacing Sith Lord! (With Anakin as the Sith Lord).

Just imagine Darth Vex in Sith-style wargear, though.
