It’s suggested they were given life by a protecting dragon, such as their lore does in wind waker. So it’s entirely possible to have similar beginnings, before branching out over the tens of thousands of years to become their own diety free race.

— Revali has a slight phobia of horses. Not to the point where he panics, or gets nauseous, or cries, or anything else too horrible, but it’s there. If he is in the presence of a horse, he will become very obviously anxious and puff up his feathers, the way an actual bird would do with a perceived threat.
