Jody sat quietly on the deck one evening, after the dishes were done and the leftovers were all put away. The storm had been rolling in for an hour, but nothing yet in way of precipitation. Her eyes keen to the almost imperceptible water vapor in the air, falling so lightly along the perimeter of the little pond out back, but not yet rejoining the water.

For a long moment she did nothing but watch as the man across from her, in his own chair, sipped his beer and looked out at the reeds swaying at the water’s edge. Only watching, not speaking a word --

Hunting Season

It's October 1st. Jody adds a checkmark to the calendar and changes the page. Pinning the fresh new picture up. The square days dangling below, swaying slightly before calming down. Bo Derek winking, catty in her pumpkin hat and not much else.

"Yeah, you're right."

Jody gets herself ready, pulling her jacket on knowing full well she will need her coat in just a few more weeks. That's Indiana for you. This errand can't wait.

The Rambler perks up and then beats it down the gravel in the general direction of town.

Later: Flush with supplies, the woman returns to the double-wide with a spring to her step. The quick stop at the station was, as always, worth the extra time. Now she unpacks the goods, putting everything in it's place. The short stack of grey sweatpants staying out on the counter next to a 12 Pack box of Schlitz with a smart little bow on it. Both a gift and a hint.
