This is a dumb question: but have you been to a doctor to check it out? You’ve been having this pain for a while and I’m wondering if this is something you’d need physical therapy for

 Not dumb! But yeah, I went when I first got it, and he gave me medication to take whenever it comes back and told me exercises to work on (and swimming also helps a lot).

It’s just... it’s a chronic thing. He told me that. He told me I had to take medication for it and if it got worse then we would have to explore other possibilities (aka surgery).

The problem is I have a very shitty, very neglectful and horrible family that has never given a shit about my health, who forces me to push my limits, who doesn’t give any importance to serious injuries I get, who have been neglecting my health for so many years. They don’t pay attention to what the doctor says and instead they think they know everything and if I have to rest and recover, they think I’m just being lazy and making excuses. And trust me, their consequences and the abuse that ensues is much worse than the pain of my shoulder, so I keep on pushing my limits because I just can’t afford the “luxury” of taking the two weeks of rest that I’m supposed to take to fix the shoulder (anyway, even if it gets fixed, it will come back because I spend too much time studying and sitting in positions that just bring the injury back, and no matter how much rehabilitation I do all the time, it’s not something I can just prevent all the time).

Thetrip to the beach was supposed to be relaxing but taking twelve rowdy boys to aplace filled with exposed skin was a decidedly bad idea.

Thankfully,Ukai had the foresight to bring Sakeo along and she is more than willing tohelp keep them in line.

Beforelong their addiction to volleyball outweighs the rush of their hormones and theboys are happily playing skins versus shirts; now garnering the attention ofthe females they were formerly oogling. The entire situation gives Ukai aheadache.

Hegoes for a stroll, finding the opening to a cave and the little boy in his soulcan’t help exploring it. Upon entry, however, his adult self is back in fullforce when the sight of a decidedly beautiful woman comes into view.

Shegreets him with a bright smile, waving him over to join her. Lost in a tranceof sorts, he complies, shucking his shirt and entering the pool she’s in,finding the water surprisingly warm.

It’swhen he gets closer that he notices…she has a tail; a mermaid tail. At whichpoint he faints dead away into the water.

Heawakens drenched upon his back on the sandy floor, his vision filled with herface. When she sees he’s ok she giggles. “If you wanted a kiss, you could havejust asked,” she teases. It takes a minute for him to realize she saved hislife.

“How…isthis…are you real?” he asks reaching up to touch her face.

“Ofcourse, I’m real! What kind of question is that?” she asks a bit miffed.

“Sorry!It’s just…I’ve never seen your kind before,” he hastily apologizes.

Shepouts a bit, crossing her arms. “That’s because there’s not many of us left.”Her voice is sadder now, eyes staring into the distance. But she snaps out ofit quickly, eyes landing on him once more. “So, tell me about yourself, you’rethe first human I’ve actually met!”

Ukaisits up, leaning against the stone of the cave and talks. He tells her abouthimself, his life, his team, his fears, his dreams, all of it. It’s like she’sunlocked his ability to be honest with his feelings for the first time indecades simply because he knows, there’s no one for her to tell these things to.

Sheshares about herself as well, the vast distances she’s traveled and the beautyin the depths of the sea not experienced by humans.

“Doyou want to go there?” she asks excitedly.

“How?I can’t breathe underwater.”

“Sillygoose,” she teases pushing against his chest, the touch warming him all the waythrough, “don’t you think if I’m real, magic is real too?”

Ukaiagrees he never considered that. And so, from that day on he’d meet with heronce a week on the weekend, traveling far and wide within the sea.

Theirrelationship blossoms into deep love, their shared experiences treasured byboth.

“Iwant to stay with you,” he confesses one day years later. He’s no longer acoach, the last of “his boys” from the original team he started with long goneto college and into their own adult lives. He’s stayed in touch but he knows, nohuman woman will ever fill the void of his mermaid princess.

“Thenlet’s go see the witch doctor,” she advises.

Whenall the preliminaries are set, he asks if he can say goodbye to his family andfriends. She agrees, and so he goes, one by one to each of his boys, explainingthat he’s leaving for good. At first, they don’t understand, don’t believe him,think he’s crazy. But he gets them all to agree to come to the shoreline on acertain date at a certain time.

Andin the sight of his former team, Takeda and the girls included, Ukai undergoeshis transformation. Gone are his legs, replaced by a brilliant orange tail.There’s many tears of goodbye, but most of them are happy since Ukai is sooverjoyed to finally be able to travel with his love for the rest of his life.

Thetwo, mermaid and man, wave goodbye to their shoreline friends, promising tocome back in a year’s time to see them.

Andnone of them ever miss those meetings.
