WIP - "You ever think about Jo?"
No. 24 - ONE DOWN TWO TO GO
self-induced injuries to escape | flashback | revenge
It’s midday, three hours into a seven-hour book-it to Sioux Falls, and if you thought daylight was a safe bet against hard conversations in the Impala’s cabin, you might be out a couple of dollars.
Sam’s facing the passenger window, staring out at who knows what, so Dean misses his words when they first form.
“Whazzat?” he calls out into the cabin.
“You ever think about Jo?” comes the soft, almost whispered question again.
Dean frowns immediately, stealinga glance over at his brother. His hearing’s gotta be off. Too many sawed-off shotgun blasts with no protective ear coverings. Or so Cas keeps telling him.
But Dean’s not so sure. He purses his lips, dashing a second look over to the passenger’s side. Sammy hasn’t moved, far as he can tell. He’s still there—all six feet of him plus change—scrunched up in the passenger like he’s trying to make himself smaller as he stares out the window, looking every bit the scared kid, or morose teenager, that Dean remembers.
Dean’s brow furrows further as he turns his eyes back to the road, his frown deepening but tinged with an old scabbed sadness that he’s still not sure he’s ready to pick at. “What, Jo? Like, you know… Jo, Jo?” Maybe, just maybe, if he says it enough the name will lose meaning.
