Mexican Long-nosed Armadillo (Dasypus mexicanus). Family Dasypodidae, order Cingulata.

I believe these used to be called the Nine-banded Armadillo but was recently reclassified as a different species.

originally i thought this was an anteater but those are edentate and have incomplete ZAs. because this one has a complete ZA, long rostrum, and little peg teeth, i am going with another dasypodidae (armadillo)

the skull is a fairy armadillo but i don't think that's relevant here

I spotted this charming little fellow hunting for snacks in the leaves today. First time I've ever been so close to a live armadillo! They are such neat critters.
