Im not asking you to reconsider, and its your blog your way, but know i am unfollowing after years of supporting this blog because of your use of ai, and its really disheartening to see. o7 i wish you the best and i hope your morals eventually win over the convenience of making managing your *tumblr blog* a little easier.
You do know that Tumblr itself uses AI just to function, correct? Any ML algorithm, not just LLMs, use the same massive amounts of processing required by NVIDIA GPUs, some at the same "data center scale" power uses, especially to power things like the algorithms behind "For You"? When people say "algorithm," it's not like it's some equation. It's constantly-running probability calculations with billions of parameters.
Tumblr doesn't hide this.
"The relevance/engagement we associate to each post during the ranking phases depends on a variety of factors. We employ machine learning techniques to learn, from a large pool of historical events, how the interplay between those factors (features) influences the likelihood of the user engaging with the candidate posts. " That's from the "Help" page. And that's not a single use like mine was. That's 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, just like every platform on the internet.
Content moderation (all those jokes about things being flagged as porn?): that's AI. Power-hungry AI and ML churning data constantly, using its billions of parameters to test each post against countless possible tags and image recognition AI. Spam detection? Same thing. Ad delivery? Same.
Just because they're not using a chatbot doesn't mean they aren't using that same power-hungry technology.
And this doesn't begin to address the fact that almost no company in the world, especially not those involved with social media, even in an "old school way" like Tumblr, has developers who, if they're not using AI, likely aren't keeping their jobs.
YOU ARE NOT INNOCENT! Is all I'm saying. But I guess since I once plugged a script into an image recognition platform, that crossed a line. As long as you aren't directly aware of it, I guess it's ok...
