Simone Peterzano—Self-Portrait, 1589
Peterzano is best known for being Caravaggio's master. You definitely see elements of this composition that inform Caravaggio's signature style; I would compare Peterzano's self-portrait with Caravaggio's 1600 portrait of Giambattista Marino. But on the whole this composition seems subdued relative to the flamboyance of Caravaggio's style. There is a quiet grace about it, which I personally value. The play of light complements, rather than competes with, Peterzano himself as the ultimate subject of the composition.
