laughing uncontrollably at how the lighting has yassified one of my neighborhood mockers

had a work event involving spending some time at a park, so i brought my binoculars with me. some observations:

with a sample size of only a handful of observations, say’s phoebes seem to stay on the ground longer than black phoebes. no idea if this hunch is actually correct because they’re both mostly perched or sallying!

baby starlings are so delightfully ugly!!! unshimmering gray floofballs that make little alarm sounds

omg a western tanager hiii :)))) little tajín-powdered face :)))))

[begrudgingly] house sparrows are cute but i only think this when they’re in greenery and not in a concrete-majority environment

male bushtits look so baby. i know this but every time i see one i relearn it

the humble california towhee is everywhere, chirping like a metronome slower than a heartbeat (my sparrow simp is showing)

lesser goldfinches are so small i’d hate to see what least goldfinches look like

these are Not Very Good pictures of red-necked phalaropes because they were taken from very far away but i need you to understand how hilariously small they seemed, bobbing in their phalarope circles as swell nearly their height rocked them up and down and to and fro. I would wear a patterned shirt with phalaropes in the waves.

many days we find a great blue heron wading in the creek. today was one of those days

saw this darling white-throated sparrow in Philly last week. my perfect little sparrow baby (it is clearly in adult plumage) you are so unique (it is among the most common sparrows in the eastern US) you are beautiful and all the sexy tan morph white-throated sparrows will want to nest with you (white and tan morphs are sort of like ABO in that white-throated sparrow breeding pairs are typically also white/tan)
