2013 Albums of da year
#3: Daughn Gibson - Me Moan (Sub Pop)
Daughn Gibson is sui generis, but most importantly he’s a self-made man. Emphasis on “man.” Last year’s All Hell was a shot across chillwave's bow, laying the smack down on generation y’s laptop beta males with a dark mix of surreal country/loop-driven soundscapes and the working-man swagger of a hard living artist. Me Moan ups the ante with live instrumentation, unapologetic ambition, and heaps of cosmic-honky-tonk-sleaze. DG’s alchemy remains impeccable: seamlessly melding contemporary DIY/electronic ethos to country and AM radio tropes, always at least one step ahead of gimmick and cliche. The first three songs show off his new live-band muscularity (particularly the instant classic “Phantom Rider”), while the rest of the album finds our man stretching his deft songwriting into the different nooks and crannies of his sound. It all works, just like Daughn. Drinking record of the year.
Best/Worst Albums of 2013
#5 - Me Moan - Daughn Gibson
I had to slip a good ole' PA boy in here.
Me Moan is largely cigarettes, Yuenglings, and unrealized poverty, which is great and very appropriate.
It's a party and it bounces, sort of like the dingy places that state school kids have ragers at. You don't notice the mold and welfare neighbors pissed off at you until the morning; the pull of being a fucking asshole was far too strong.
The album is largely on youth, which is a tired topic for me at this point. I mean, this album is probably someone's #1 somewhere. But, being distanced from this, I was happy to objectify the music and enjoy the references.
The country samples are happy but always sinister, which makes for great implications. Sometimes the bassline wanders, but the premier tracks always stay course. Gibson is sorta' like country kids's Drake. Except that country kids hate Drake so no one listens to Gibson. It's too bad, really. We'll probably get a few more from Gibson before he hangs it up, but he's the sort of guy who is likely waiting for a hit.
Regardless, this will be one to look back at if he ever does hit a big one.
Daughn Gibson - "Phantom Rider"
The eerie and sexy latest artistic statement from my heartthrob of 2013, the awesome Daughn Gibson. In the new video his face keeps transforming into a leering skull - it's like a ghoulish Francis Bacon painting come to life. And you get glimpses of him without his shirt.
Great video to fantastic song. Creepy
