The first time I met SR Nathan, it was over tea in 2002 at the Istana with Mrs Urmila Nathan. He'd agreed to launch my 4th book, Daughters of Asia, written in collaboration with the Singapore Council of Women's Organization.The book was an anthology of inspirational stories of the strong women of ASEAN, which included my re-telling of the story of Mrs Nathan. Mr Nathan shared at the time, his love of the written word and the importance for us to document our stories of both trials and triumphs. How else would history remember the commitment of pioneers and the sacrifices they made? At his State Funeral service today, his part in Singapore's history was told in 7 heartfelt eulogies. Among other accolades paid to him, was that he had a front row seat at the many events that shaped the nation, facing challenges with steely resolve - a man who quietly and without fuss, gave his best years to Singapore.
