One of the most popular Holy Week religious celebrations in Mallorca (Balearic Islands) are the "davallaments" ("Descents from the Cross"). These are religious representations where a statue of Christ is unnailed from the cross and taken in procession, as a remembrance of Christ's Deposition from the Cross.
One of the most spectacular "davallaments" is celebrated in the town of Pollença since the year 1650. The statue of Christ is unnailed and taken in procession down the 365 stairs leading to an 18th-century chapel to reach the church. Believers gather to fulfill their roles dressed as Roman centurions, hermits, women dressed in mourning, and some men wearing traditional Mallorcan clothes that represent the old landowners. These traditional clothes are passed down from generation to generation in families, and some of the capes worn now are between 100 and 150 years old.
