New Jersey- Newborn set on fire in the middle of the street
Witnesses say the 22 year old woman stopped in the middle of the street
Pemberton Township, New Jersey – There is bad in this world, and then there is pure evil. A New Jersey woman is alleged to have set a baby on fire in the middle of the road Friday. According to authorities, the baby died Saturday. No names have been released at this time.
Sources say neighbors witnessed a woman, in her 20’s, douse a newborn child in an unknown flammable substance and then set the infant on fire. Officers responding to the scene put the fire out, and the child was flown to St. Christopher’s Hospital For Children with second and third degree burns on the entirety of the baby’s body.
Neighbor Dave Joseph, 45, said he witnessed the incident, which occurred shortly before 11 PM at the unit block of the street. “A young woman had gotten out of her car and lit something on fire in the middle of the road,” he said. She told him she was burning dog waste, but he says she knew what she was doing, calling her demeanor calm. The woman attempted to flee, but neighbors stopped her from escaping.
“It was just mind-boggling. It was a nightmare even if you have a strong heart,” he said. “Hopefully she’ll pay for it.”
The newborn was still alive and breathing when the police showed up. Joseph said, “We thought, hopefully, it would fight. It was fighting all night.”
But early Saturday morning the infant succumbed to the burns and died. It is not known at this time if the woman was the child’s mother, but she was taken to Deborah Hospital in Pemberton for examination, and then arrested.
What makes a human being do such a vile, horrible thing? Only evil can be the answer to that. Mental illness could play a factor, we do not know yet. Certainly anyone who can do such a thing is not okay. But ill or not, to light an infant on fire, that is a special kind of evil.
