karkat gets kicked off a pirate ship and has to survive alone,  the only thing separating him and the ocean being a tiny shitty lifeboat a crew member on the ship organized him as a last favor. dave encounters him shortly after and driven mostly by loneliness decides to help karkat survive and get back to human civilisation somehow. on their adventure they encounter various threads which come with the cold, dark ocean, strange islands and even more pirates as a strong bond forms between them.

when their journey nears its end decisions have to be made. the initial goal appears less and less appealing since certain separation comes with it.
