Even in this outsider songwriter's small oeuvre, Subway To The Country is an outlier. Its roots and veins are deep in the primary inspiration of early Tin Pan Alley and Brecht and Weill as well as theatrical music, blues and the folk revival, swirled in shades of gray to create a dark masterpiece. - Thom Jurek

Didn't blog about yesterday's album, so double today:
Yesterday was Pelican West by Haircur 100. So this was a weird one. First couple songs were some pretty generic stuff that bored the hell out of me. But then, we get to the instrumental and lyrics-lite songs and those were actually good. It's definitely interesting. 3/5
Today is American Gothic by David Ackles. This is an album trying to be capital-A Art. It's very big and important and the songs are absolutely DRIPPING with themes of sadness and hard lives. And damn it works yeah this album was great. If you pay attention to what I tend to gravitate towards, you'll be unsurprised that the song "Ballad of the Ship of State" is my favorite on this. If you are like me and like music that's clearly by an incredibly sad person, you'll enjoy this. 4/5

Found this disc for a buck the other day, and I had a memory of enjoying his first album a number of years ago, despite his lugubrious, Neil Diamond-y voice, so I nabbed it. That album was relatively stripped down from what I recall, but this one is pretty ornate, with quite a lot of orchestration, giving it a kind of soundtrackish feel, no rhythm section and all horn/string arrangements. I was really finding it aggravating, and couldn't quite place why, then I read the liners and it spoke of its "Americana crossed with musical theatre" approach, which is, unfortunately, dead-on, and is why I really, really don't like this album very much; not bad necessarily, but really not for me.
